Surprisingly I found this film to be quite amiable. Amusing and entertaining with a half decent script that everyone seemed to enjoy. It has nods to some other films, Men in Black and Mission Impossible in particular plus Tom Hollands voice casting works well with a couple of cryptic Spider-man saga nods thrown in for good measure.

Overall, the film was okay. It's one of the better Blue Sky movies made, as it's not as good as The Peanuts Movie but not as bad as the Ice Age franchise films. Hopefully, the original experiments from Blue Sky continue well through the Disney era.

“Espías a escondidas” es una película de animación dirigida por Nick Bruno y Troy Quane, que utiliza el formato de buddymovie para contar una comedia de espionaje. Porque Will Smith pone la voz de Lance Sterling, el mejor espía del mundo que se convierte en paloma por beber accidentalmente una pócima del joven inventor Walter, quien tiene la voz de Tom Holland.
Lo primero que vale destacar de esta película es que el personaje de Lance Sterling copia el aspecto físico y los rasgos faciales de Will Smith, para animar a este espía similar a James Bond que debe luchar contra los planes de un villano, que homenajea también a los de esta serie de películas. Pero lo que lo diferencia y lo acerca al público infantil es que comparte protagonismo con este joven nerd cuyo aspecto desgarbado y torpeza lo convierten en su antítesis. Y a esto hay que sumarle el hecho de que se convierte en paloma, un giro en la trama al que se le da una explicación científica, pero no deja de ser un tópico de los cuentos de hadas que además de generar una larga serie de gags brinda una moraleja sobre el trabajo en equipo.
Otro aspecto importante que vale la pena destacar de “Espías a escondidas” es su diseño de producción, ya que su propuesta estética copia con fidelidad edificios y lugares reales, entre los que se pueden reconocer las ciudades de Washington DC y Venecia, por ejemplo, que se suman a las modernas bases secretas tanto de héroes como de villanos. Porque es acá donde más se puede apreciar la larga trayectoria en otras áreas del cine de animación de esta pareja de directores debutantes en este rol.
En conclusión, “Espías a escondidas” cumple con su objetivo de entretener al público infantil al que está dirigida en primer lugar, gracias a sus gags efectivos y sus escenas de acción. Y si bien no está a la altura de la obra maestra del género que fue “Las aventuras de Tintín: el secreto del unicornio”, pero puede dar lugar a una exitosa franquicia gracias al carisma de sus personajes y la gran variedad de aventuras que pueden protagonizar en el futuro.

It made realize that the reason the film was pished back four times was for this very reason. Scenes were cut and the overall story was changed by Blue Sky probably because Disney (it's owners as result of the Disney-Fox merger) probably wasn't keen with the original cut of the film. This is backed up by Blue Sky's wrap up party and the earlier trailer and concept art.
Didnt expect this movie to be so good. The ending hit me right in the feels

After watching this film, it made feel as if the film was originally made for an older audience. Bird Lance (Will Smith) has a censored swear scene and some jokes seemed to be kiddied-down with the overall message being half-hearted and underwhelming.
