2015 Sun Peaks Spartan Ultra Beast I have lots on my heart and mind, and am undecided which bits to share. I suspect this will be a long read but I’m not sorry, because reading is not at all like climbing Mount Satan, so you can suffer a bit too. Let’s just see where my fingers lead. I woke up at 4:30 on Saturday feeling tired, but better than I had all week as this time I’d managed to sleep between 3 and 4 hours in the quiet, comfortable hotel bed. The few nights previous had only offered 1 to 2 hours each. I’d been too stressed, and even NyQuil overdoses hadn’t helped to knock me out. My gear was all laid out so I took my time getting ready. A few minutes on the toilet turned out to be very, very fruitful which is always a great omen before a race. Showered, rubbed myself down with copious amounts of anti-chafing stuff, got geared up, and boiled water for my triple portion oatmeal breakfast. If things went according to plan it would be my only real meal for the next 10 hours. Terry, my roommate for the weekend, looked calm. He signed up for this at the last minute because he felt sorry for me when he saw me whining about it on Facebook. Of course he was calm. he’s the kind of guy who would be the last survivor if the zombie apocalypse were to hit. He’s like The Hulk and Terminator rolled into one, lucky bastard. Spartners! We walked to the start line to meet up with the few others we knew who’d made the 5 hour drive from Vancouver. It’s just a couple of degrees above freezing, but the sun looks like it might come out, and I figure the 2 thin layers I have on should be enough. A few hugs and good luck pats on the back before we’re corralled into the start area, like cattle to the slaughter. Some obnoxious guy on a microphone manages to get a few of my fellow Ultra Beast participants to shout out some cheeseball cheers as a drone video camera buzzes ahead. He asks us to take a knee and tells us that up to 40% of us might not complete the course. I already knew that, but didn’t really want to hear it. It’s 8:45, 3 degrees Celsius, and we’re off. Off to what? Earlier this year I decided to sign up for something that seemed impossible, but definitely fun to try. An approximately 50km mountain obstacle course race. The most I’d even run was a marathon, 42k, but that was on flat roads and didn’t include heavy carries, mud, ice water, ropes, walls, etc. But my inspirational running coaches, Allison and John Tai gave me confidence when I asked if they thought I could do these kinds of races. I signed up for this around 6 months ago and also threw in a 17km Tough Mudder and a 6k Spartan Sprint, both in July, both for ‘practice’. Various leg and foot injuries since my marathon 3 years ago have plagued me, and prevented me from even getting close to the fitness level I had back then, so I figured training for a different kind of event might be easier on the legs. Tough Mudder in Whistler was great, tons of fun despite the rain, I finished it without much trouble, but it wasn’t all that hilly, hilly is my Achilles’ heel. The Spartan Sprint was awful. Just around 6k, but steep, killer for my lousy cardio. I finished that in over an hour and felt exhausted, and had re-torn the muscle under my right arch. I realised then that Ultra Beast, 2 months away was going to be the equivalent of this Sprint effort, but 10 times the distance, with every hour being harder than the last due to fatigue. I wanted to spend the rest of the summer at the gym climbing the Stairmaster with a heavy backpack, climbing Grouse Grind, doing as many hikes as I could, and training with John and Alli on monkey bars, hilly sandbag and bucket carries. But it was all very limited, plantar fasciitis and complications from that meant I spent most of my time resting, stretching, getting massages and physio pokes and prods. A very frustrating time spent getting fatter, not fitter. The last couple of weeks were a bit better. I managed 3 Grind climbs and then some one day, that felt like something significant. I was as ready as I could be considering the circumstances. No excuses. ready So yeah, we’re off. I’m told it’s 5500 feet up so pacing myself is vital. I’m doing my best to stay positive while I watch the much of the pack, including everyone I know pull ahead. There are 50 obstacles, most are fairly easy. I reach the first difficult one after a very long climb. It’s an 8 ft wall. Any obstacle you miss, it’s 30 burpees, no second chances either. If you drop something, or touch the ground when you’re not supposed to, burpees. I run, jump, catch the edge with 1 hand, which would be enough except both my calves seize up with cramps. Shit. I hang there a few extra seconds stretching them out then swing and pull myself over. We’re an hour in and I already have cramps. That’s a really, really bad sign as there are 9 to go. We got a slap in the face email a few days ago telling us that we have 10 hours to complete the course, 5 to get to the halfway point (the Ultra Beast is 2 laps), and if we don’t make those cut-off times, no medal, no t-shirt, go home. Until then I had understood that we didn’t have time pressure. I thought it would take me somewhere around 15 hours, and that if just did the one lap, the Beast, that I’d be getting a Beast medal. But fair enough I suppose, I signed up for the UB, so that’s what I’ll have to do to get my trinket. Trying to stay positive I march on to a log carry. A few tree chunks are on the ground, not much variety in sizes, I assume they are all the same weight. I hoist one up onto my shoulder, and holy shit this is at least 100lb. You have to carry it up a hill and back down without letting it touch the ground. I dropped to my knee a few times on the ascent to relive my lower back and switch shoulders. ¾ of the way up a guy in a blue shirt who’se on his way down comes over and says “switch. ” “Switch? ” “Yeah man, looks like you took a really heavy one, this thing I got feels like balsa wood. ” “No, I can manage, thanks though! ” “Seriously, I see you’re hurting, just downhill for me now. ” We faced each other and switched logs. It felt like gravity was suddenly switched off. This kind of thing is what I love most about these events. Strangers helping each other, often at significant cost to themselves. Batman socks, and Superman sleeves did not make this any easier A bunch more climbing and obstacles later and I reach the top of the mountain for the concrete block carry. That’s done and we run around a bend to see that the top of the mountain was actually not the top of anything. Damn, climb some more. My cardio is shit, but I’m still pushing and feeling more or less ok, the cramps aren’t too bad yet. I chat with a guy running next to me in bare feet. He’s carrying his shoes in his hands because of blisters. I give him a couple of bad aids which he pockets for later. The sun comes out. I feel good, moving along nicely. Here’s a line of massive tires, each attached to a rope. You have to drag the tire without use of the rope from point a to b, I dunno, maybe 20 feet, then back again with the rope. It’s a bitch, but I manage. As I’m about to carry on I spot the blue shirt guy who switched logs with me struggling with his tire. Sprint over there and help him. High 5s and we carry on. Balance beam. This is a stupid one that I haven’t managed to do in practice yet. Deep breath and I go for it at a quick pace. Made it! I yelled out a ‘yeah! ’ as I jump off at the end and get a few ‘yeah’ echoes from others echoing my relief and joy. No burpees yet, it feels great. Finally we’re heading downhill. The rest of the first lap will be much faster, as fast as I dare to run down steep, muddy, rocky, slippery trails, all dotted with fatal looking branches threatening to impale the unwelcome visitors. As I get below the cloud line it’s snowing. Brrrrr, but bring it mountain, I can take it, this is why I let my beard grow out. There’s a row of four mud hills separated by pools of ice water. The water is only knee deep but really, really cold and not great for cramps. I jump in and out of the water as fast as possible between each mud pile, but on the last one I get stuck behind someone who is struggling to climb out, I help them with a push but those few extra seconds are agony for my feet that seize up and I roll around on the ground after I’ve pulled myself out while the ice water drains out of my shoes. I didn’t feel my toes again until I took a bath back at the hotel. No time for feeling sorry for myself. Carry on down. I hear music. Getting closer to the village. There’s a massive wooden a-frame structure to climb over. It takes a while because I’m terrified of heights. But I see the finish line from the top. Great sign. The signage is a little confusing. “Which way? ” I ask one of the volunteers. “There” he points. “What? up there? ” Shit. Up again. We climb. This is when the reality of this monumental task finally, clearly sets in. The confidence I felt a few seconds ago is washed away with my silent tears. My legs are cramping pretty badly going up. My quads and calves are quivering, seizing up. I feel cramps in muscles I didn’t know I had. When the terrain isn’t too rocky I turn around and climb backwards to give those muscles a rest. We’re actually on what I think looks like a different mountain now. I hope it isn’t as high as the first. As I approach the sandbag carries the mood has changed. Not just mine. I sense it in others around me. It’s getting gritty now. The mental battles have started. I check the time. There’s still a chance I will make the cut-off for the second lap. Come on! There are yellow 30lb bags for ladies, red 50lb bags for men. That’s heavy, but doable, much easier than chunky tree sections. I balance one on my head and head up. “Hey, two! ” “Huh? ” “You have to take two” one of the volunteers tells me. I look up and sure enough, others dotted around all have 2 each. I shift the one onto my shoulder and reach for a second. I can’t get it up onto my shoulder, I try a few times, impossible. I drop it, my hand can’t hold on. I shift the other one onto the other shoulder and try carrying the second with my other hand. My fingernails feel like they’re going to pop off. I drop it. A guy finishing his lap comes right up to my face and helps me slide one of his off his shoulder to mine. “Thanks! ” I’m off. 100 lb up a 100m steep hill and back down. But I fail. I made it maybe 20 and collapsed. Back is killing me. I tried various ways of rolling around, squirming into a position that will allow me to pick them up, but it’s futile. Burpees. Doing 30 of them when I’m feeling fresh is really, really tough. Now, it’s, well, you can imagine. My form is awful. Going from push up to standing is slow, one foot at a time to stand, heavy, labored breathing. Only good thing is that my extremities are so frozen the pain is probably not as bad as it could be. I don’t know if it’s cheating but I don’t do them on the spot. Every burpee takes me about a foot in the direction of the path going forward. Every inch helps, I figure. I do as many as I can, I lose count. Maybe I did 20, doesn’t matter because I now notice what’s next. I was hoping the few remaining obstacles would be dotted on the route back down to the village. Nope. I see an people heading up a steep grassy slope to the top of the world. The guys up top are smaller than ants. It’s like watching a horror movie. Zombies slowly making their way up. Something occurred to me. Sparta, from what I remembered is on the Peloponnese Plain in Greece. A ‘Plain’ is fucking flat, isn’t it? Spartans didn’t have to do these fucking hills. I follow. Try to go as fast as I can. At this point I know I will not be collecting a medal, but at least I should make the ½ way cutoff and at least be proud of that. It’s the longest, toughest climb so far. A couple of missteps and my sciatic nerves shoot pain down my legs. I’ve tweaked my back. I pop two Percosets and hope they improve my mood as well as my spine. Top of the second mountain is littered with massive tires. Pick one, flip it over twice. My back isn’t happy. While I’m resting the parka’d volunteer asks me if I need help, a medic, maybe a ride down? I must look like shit. This volunteer concern becomes a pattern. Running down is out of the question. My back won’t allow it. I hobble, rest, and stretch, hobble, rest, and stretch. It’s too cold. Cramps are getting quite severe. I grab the top wire of a fence to lean over and stretch and am surprised that the cramps are even in my hands and forearms. Twitch, twitch, twitch. A guy come running by behind me and asks if I’m not getting electric shocks? Oh, that’s what that is. Let go. Midpoint cut-off time has passed, there’s only a few obstacles left. Easy ones, a smaller sand bag carry was in front of me. I can’t stand up straight. I lay on the ground next to the volunteer and ask her if I can just rest a little bit. She asks if I want a ride down. Every time I heard radio chatter it was concerning injured people, so I didn’t want to use up resources that someone more desperate might need. No ride, I told her I was going to just walk it down. That’s where I quit, I didn’t carry the bag, and I didn’t bother with burpees. The sun came out again as I passed the javelin throw that I’d really been looking forward to. The rope climb was at the bottom of the slope I was on, the ½ way line for the Ultra Beast, the finish line for the Beast. 100 feet away I needed another stop. I lay on my back, pulled one leg over to relieve by bulging disk and just lay there for a bit. Suddenly half a dozen paramedics are on top of me. I’m embarrassed. “I ‘m ok, I’m ok! ” I tell them, “just needed to stretch. I can make it down alone, please, it’s the only dignity I have left. ” They helped me to my feet, and hovered around behind me as I slowly made my way to the finish line. There’s a large crowd of spectators cheering behind a fence, I look around but no one is finishing, they’re cheering for me. A guy from the crowd I tried to give me a high five, but I couldn’t bring myself to even look at him, too many bitter tears in my eyes. The finish line is a pile of burning logs you jump over. They take your picture while you’re airborne, it’s a great memento. Everyone smiles when they jump, relieved and proud. I had a unique jump planned in my mind which I wished I hadn’t remembered right at that moment, as I slunk around the outside. the goal Tables of medals were in front, a girl, not knowing I was doing the Ultra Beast offered me a Beast medal. I turned it down. It didn’t feel like I’d earned it. Sure, I was in pain, but so was everyone else up there. Ask anyone who completes a race like this if it was painless. They’ll laugh at you. It was a little before 2 PM, I’d done 6 hours and around 26, maybe 27k on a 5500 foot mountain. Only half my goal. Funny that the injuries that I had battled over the year, and thought might keep me from starting the race hardly bothered me at all, it was everything else. horrible hills I hobbled toward the hotel as fast I as I could, I just wanted to be alone to sort myself out and at least have a chance of a decent night out with the others. The hotel was only 5 minutes from the race, but halfway there was a really tempting wooden bench in the sun. I opted to rest there for a few minutes. 20 minutes later I woke up on the bench, my face resting on my backpack, my knees tucked in under my belly, and my ass up in the air. I wonder how many people got a photo of that. My reflection in the elevator was pretty awful. The look of defeat. I fought the mountain and lost. I had planned to take after pictures, but changed my mind, I don’t want to see that guy again. Surprised and very relieved, I found Terry back in the room. He’d completed the first lap in good time but opted out of the second knowing there was no way he’d be able to finish by 6 pm. Toughest thing he’d ever done, he said. Grabbed my phone to let family know I was alive, and it let me know that Liverpool had beaten Villa 3-2, and Sturridge was back and scoring goals. A silver lining to the day! After a bath, a rest, and a bunch more painkillers it was time for a drink. We toasted to a good effort, but the beer made us feel ill, so we drank a little more. Still didn’t feel great, but we persevered and a few more eventually did make us feel better. So to finish the day off we drank a bunch more. I slept more soundly on Saturday night. Out of 200 people that attempted the Ultra Beast, only 45 completed it. The announcer was dead wrong, 75% fail rate. I’d bitten off more than I could chew, and chocked on it. My son, Sebi said it was ok, I did more than most people would. It’s true, and a sweet thing to say, but regardless, I’m still bitterly disappointed. Will I try again? Back at the hotel, right after the race, I went online and signed up for next year’s Ultra Beast. Naaaa, are you fucking kidding. When the pain subsides in a few days I’ll decide where to go from here. Thanks for reading. Writing things out is supposed to be therapeutic, I don’t know if that’s true, it’s certainly brought back the emotions.

After hearing complaints about the lack of quality posts, I had a brilliant idea! Instead of reading listen to this---> A very cringy audio personal ad for you're earholes!!! Hi everyone! This is my second post with some added bits! So, in my current situation/isolation it’s hard to meet people. I mean, I have friends and all but they live out in the city while i’m up here in the sticks. Straight to the point: I’m searching for females to become friends with and maybe more if we hit it off! Although, if you are a male that stumbled upon this post we can be buds too(It has happened before)! So anyway let’s get this started! I’m a 22 year old, 5’11” Hispanic guy from a little farming town in Southern California. I’m close enough to some cities that I can go socialize for a bit with friends, but far enough that I can remain a hermit. I am sort of an ambivert. I think my friends have described me as friendly, artsy, smart, quiet and at times sort of bro-ish. I’m the type of person who listens well and can engage in conversation. I’m also terrible at describing myself. A few pictures of myself wearing my skull kitty shirt why not: I'm an amateur voice actor in that I like to make silly voices and accents for fun and at times record more serious acting things for “clients”. I hope to one day make it a career. If you look through my post history you can listen to voice things I've recorded for internet folks on soundcloud. I can play guitar/bass well enough to sound musical and I can kind of sing(I really need to practice though). I think it would be really cool to compose/score for a videogame or movie one day! I love to read but I haven’t had much time for it lately. Currently I am reading A Song of Ice and Fire book 4/5. My amazon saved list is full of books I've wanted to start (the classics and such, apparently they are around 300 pages! You don't realize/appreciate that until you read a fantasy series. ). Don’t worry though, I am definitely not a book snob, read whatever you like, yo! I think Netflix is one of the best things out there! My instant list, however, seems to grow more than shrink (help me! ). Like with books, I have a lot of those award winning movies and series on the list that I've wanted to watch, but I either spend too much time deciding on a movie or I end up watching something like Portlandia or Arrested Development again. Some of my favorite movies include Good Will Hunting and Spirited Away. You know those imgur lists of must watch movies/shows? Let’s tackle them! I will admit I am the male equivalent of what people call “curvy” aka FAT. Cringe at my high school self!!! There are many people who are fine with being like that, but I figured a while back that I only have one body and it deserves to be as healthy and fit as I am able to get it to be (grammar? ). Love yourself enough that you will care for it. I have been hitting the gym (and recently added bicycling) for a while now and I’m looking forward to reaching my goal weight/gains this year! The douchiest picture of myself (bonus tube socks! #HatersGonHate) I love to cook, especially when I have a recipe at hand. It’s like Legos with food! Amateur food porn---> Music. I freakin' love music so much! All genres have something special to offer and I am slowly expanding my musical horizon. Lately I have been listening to a lot of electro-swing, chillstep and post-rock. I am not a “hipster” when it comes to music as I like sharing new discoveries with friends instead of just keeping it to myself. Let’s make collaborative playlists on Spotify! Also my favorite band is MUSE. I consider myself more of a casual gamer. I play games like Sims4, Pokemon(dat Blaziken tho) and Rocksmith. I really love relaxing heavy story games like Life is Strange and Gone Home. I would like to get into games like WoW or Starcraft but I feel like I would unhealthily obssesify over it and/or the level of entry is too damn high. It’d be fun to have someone to play with online! I like drawing and writing fancy little things every now and then. I also write dumb song lyrics bits and pieces of choruses. I’m not great at them but I’m getting better. Fun Facts about me! I have mild Dermatographia! YEAH!!! I am obsessed with accents and I will obsess over yours if it's not General American! I am a proficient whistler. My favorite color is Aquamarine. I work at a hardware store and sadly most of my customers are not very smart. Fluent in both English and Spanish with a neutral accent (learning French with Duolingo) I have made Social Anxiety my bitch! Kind of… My friend calls me Mocha Boy/ Coconut (brown on the outside, white on the inside) Some site once said I was INTJ so take that with a grain of salt. To me those blueish-purple LED christmas lights appear fuzz/hairy and weird. I’m terrible with famous names (directors/actors/musicians etc. ) I'm open minded and would love to hear your perspective on life, the universe and everything! If you are cool, not insane, found me mildly interesting and thought this was a quality post PM me and include a picture please but don’t let that stop you.

First Hit: I was, and even a day later, confused by this story and film.
We're really introduced to Cristi (Vlad Ivanov) and Gilda (Catrinel Marlon) when Gilda walks up to Cristi and asks to speak with him in his apartment. Cristi whispers into her ear that he apartment is bugged, so she kisses him and tells him she'll play the part of a hooker, and they can whisper her request, which is to help her by getting a criminal, Zsolt, out of prison.
In an early scene, Cristi is on a ferry heading to an island where the ancient people use to communicate by whistling. Cristi is part of a plot working with other criminals to free Zsolt and to do this he has to learn the whistling language.
The language breaks vowels and consonants into seven whistling sounds. This lesson in this language was the most exciting part of the film. I was fascinated with Cristi learning how to whistle and wanted to practice, along with him, right in the theater.
As the film develops, some parts led me to believe that the story in the movie was pre-planned, and I missed something as the film progressed. At other times, I felt as though Cristi and Gilda were planning the ending along the way because they'd fallen for each other.
As an undercover detective, Cristi works for an unnamed woman place by Rodica Lazar, who is trying to play both ends of this story.
The result is a film that has the appearance of a storyline running at two different levels, but in the end, the person sitting next to me asked if he missed something about how the ending worked out, I said "I don't know, and I still don't.
Ivanov was quietly compelling as the detective who was also on the take. Marlon was excellent as the woman who seemed totally in control of story behind the plot. Lazar was strong as the head of the investigation and also susceptible to corruption. Corneliu Porumboiu wrote and directed this quizzical story that left me hanging.
Overall: I either missed a critical section of this Romanian film or the story was attempting to be too elusive.
