I wanna note the comments are turned off for this one. Starts off with Bethy silently demanding a kiss on the lips, with Dav awkwardly complying. 15 months into the marriage and these two still can’t figure out how not to kiss like a couple of 9 year olds doing it on a dare. Bethany uses her obnoxious way of saying “Bebe” and cradles her belly. Dav bounces around like a hyperactive theater kid. First she asks for donations while Dav does the universal “make it rain” sign. Don’t think that sends the message you think it does hun. They dive in on whether or not Dav was nervous the first time they did “it” he insists he was not. Bethany says she’s pretty sure that’s a girl only thing, hooray for sexism, because only girls seem to ask her that question (on her blog GIRL defined, go figure) but she says she doesn’t know cos she’s not a guy. Thank you Bethy for that insight. Before saying he wasn’t nervous, Bethany says “I already wrote a blog on this” and Dave actually says “oh, what did you say so I don’t contradict it” YA’LL. They move on to talk about chores and I’m lost. Apparently they naturally just evenly divide them. Hasn’t Birthy preached numerous times that women should be keepers at home? Isn’t that her whole spiel on the role of a wife? Anyway, they pass along their very ~silliest~ story, which is the first time Dav ~tooted~ in front of her. Teehee. It’s very cute and silly. I’m gagging. Next question it’s on S E X. They recommend two books and then surprise- her own book- in how to maintain a healthy sex life. She hammers home managing proper expectations. You guys what you see in movies? Bethany’s pretty sure that’s not even the BEST sex out there. You think Bethany? You think sex being portrayed where you don’t even see the p going in the v might not be the best? Somebody just discovered you can have sex with the woman on top and she’s very pleased with herself. Jk she doesn’t say that, that’s just where I imagine her smugness from knowing good sex after never seeing porn and being with the same man for a year comes from. Moving on to an age question. In Dav’s opinion it’s not that big of a deal. Especially maturity wise, there’s not that much of a gap he says. Because he is EXTREMELY mature. Yes he says that. They’re talking about spending the time with the baby. She plans to work while the baby’s sleeping. She plans on spending quality time with her own child. Groundbreaking. Keeping the romance alive when DJ comes- “how to keep the fire alive. ” Communicating. Dav repeats this word about twenty times. Guys, they even got together the other night to discuss this. Wow. A married couple who lives together sat down and talked about sitting down and talking. They’re actually ingenious with these insights. They’re both very connected orientated, they both love being connected. They both don’t go very long without being connected. Emotionally connected. This will help them thrive. I’m only halfway through. Please save me. Why did I do this to myself. It’s just the same droning on and on. We get it. You are the mayonnaise saviors of us, sex, and marriage. He’s droning on. Bethy is cradling the chosen child and fidgeting with his sweater. I hope that’s a white claw can you have in your hand Dav, for your sake. The last question is a doozy- “how would you feel if your child DIDNT believe in God? ” Oh boy. Dav sees questions as a part of life. He thinks it’s exciting to see how his relationship with his kid would develop. He’s less concerned with his child holding his beliefs- it doesn’t actually bother him that much. WOW. Dav is so close to breaking out I swear, and I am strangely proud of his answer. It of course goes against literally everything they have ever preached. He wants to raise a kid who is a decent human being- of course he wants him to love God, but at the same time he really wants a great relationship with him. Keep going boo you got this. He says he understands doubts cos he’s had them and still does. YES DAV YES. He’s gotten serious for the first time around Bethany. His voice even deepens and he gets much chiller. He said there’s scarier things than a kid naturally doubting God. Bethany contributes nothing to this but a few murmurs. It’s the best. She will probably punish him for this off camera by demanding five more kisses and an Instagram post on how pretty she is. TLDR- Dav is having doubts and admits to it! Free movie just one more kiss full. I know this has been done to death but I still wanna offer my plot as to how I would have approached this movie. This fix will not tack on Palpatine or any other side character like Zori or Jannah, give Ben Solo a proper redemption, not retcon everything from the previous two movies and give Rey, Finn, Poe and Rose proper character arcs. I will divide the story into five acts. ACT 1 This act will basically show where each character is mentally and emotionally, set up their arcs for the movie and set up the main conflicts of the movie. The first scene will be Finn, Poe, C-3PO, Chewie, Rose and BB-8 all going on a mission to retrieve information about a map which will lead to a powerful Sith weapon. This scene will be like the original movie but we will see them infiltrate a First Order base rather than get info from a traitor. There’s a chase scene and the heroes manage to survive and return to the Resistance base where they meet Rey and Leia. Here the character arcs are established. Rey is trying to control her tremendous force powers, Poe is trying to live up to Leia and Finn is uncomfortable with fighting First Order stormtroopers since they are clearly brainwashed and can be converted to the good side. We catch up with Kylo Ren on the First Order ship. He is supreme leader now but he is being haunted by the ghost of Luke Skywalker(I took inspiration for this part from Colin Trevorrow’s script). He also gets notified about this Sith weapon and decides to track it down. We cut to Captain Phasma(who is still alive) and General Hux discussing about Kylo. They feel that Kylo is wasting the First Order’s time and resources on finding ancient Sith artifacts rather than trying to conquer the galaxy. Hux says that he is unfit to be their supreme leader and the first step to achieving domination over that Galaxy is to overthrow Kylo Ren. ACT 2 Just like the original movie the heroes travel to the desert planet of Pasanna to find a map to the planet of the Sith weapon. Along with them are also a lot of Resistance members in case a conflict with the First Order ensues. The heroes find the man with the map, Lando Calrissian, who hands them the the heroes find out the planet where the weapon is located. We then get the force communication between Kylo and Rey and he finds out where the heroes are. We get the chase scene with the Stormtroopers as well as an action scene where The Knights Of Ren slaughter Resistance fighter which showcases their abilities. The scene with Kylo and Rey goes the same and Chewbacca is captured in the struggle. However in this scene, Rey uses force lighting to destroy two other First Order ships NOT containing Chewie. Her enormous force power leaves her and Kylo in shock as Chewbacca is captured. Kylo returns to the First Order base and we get a scene with him and Chewbacca. This scene will play out like NandoVMovies’ version and will give Chewie a great character moment. After defeating Chewie, Kylo reads his mind to find out where the weapon is. Outside the room, Kylo is ambushed by Hux, Phasma and his soldiers. We finally see Kylo at his best as he slaughters stormtroopers after stormtroopers but they keep on coming. Hux reveals that his entire army is against him and once they kill him, they’ll execute the Final Order(like the original movie with the Star Destroyers). He realizes that his entire army has turned against him and leaves the base in his ship to retrieve the Sith weapon on Exogol. Hux sends a broadcast to the entire galaxy to surrender or die in the Final Order. Rey also decides to travel to Exogol to stop Kylo from getting the weapon while the rest of the heroes decide to rescue Chewie. ACT 3 Finn, Poe, Rose and C-3PO infiltrate the First Order base similar to the original movie. They manage to free Chewie but Poe becomes impulsive and decides to take out Hux to make Leia’s job easier. However, they are caught. This moment will be very emotional as C-3PO SACRIFICES HIMSELF to save the heroes. They manage to escape at a big cost. Poe is scolded by Leia for being reckless while Rose and Finn mourn C-3PO. Rose thinks that his sacrifice was worthless as all it does is reduce the Resistance’s man power but Finn explains to her that they are in a war and that to save the people that you love, you sometimes have to sacrifice yourself. This sticks with Rose. Meanwhile at Exogol, both Kylo and Rey arrive at the entrance to a cave where the weapon is kept. They decide to go in together rather than fight each other as they don’t know what’s inside the cave. This scene will play out like the beginning of the original movie with the horror tone. Inside the cave, they find none other than EMPEROR PALPATINE(I know I said I wouldn’t force him into the film but this is just a small appearance). He explains that he managed to survive his fall in Death Star 2 but his body isn’t strong enough to use the Force and conquer the galaxy once again. He says that the only way the Sith can take over again is through a new heir to the Sith empire. Kylo steps forward as he is finally about to fulfill his birthright but Palpatine stops him and says that he isn’t the Sith heir, Rey is. ACT 4 After finding out that she is the Sith heir, Rey is shocked. Palpatine transfers all his powers into her and dies. Kylo is enraged and engages in a duel with Rey. However, she is now much aggressive and wipes the floor with him. She shoots him with force lightning, throws him across the caves and finally stabs him with her lightsaber. Leia senses a disturbance in the force and just like the original movie, she uses the last of her force energy to heal her son and dies. Rey senses this and stops herself from killing Kylo and leaves. Kylo is now left alone at Exogol. He is broken. He got betrayed by his entire army, couldn’t fulfill his birthright and got destroyed in a duel against Rey. He mourns his mother as the memory of his father Han Solo appears. Han explains that Kylo can still turn to the good. Kylo says that he is too far gone but Han explains that it’s never too late to change and that Kylo gets to decide his own destiny. Kylo is motivated by this and throws away his red lightsaber and leaves to stop Hux from executing the Final Order. On Ahch-To, Rey also prepares to throw Anakin’s lightsaber away after the insane revelation. Just like the original movie, Luke visits her and tells her that Palpatine doesn’t get to decide if she is a Sith or a Jedi. Rey gets to decide her own destiny. He gives her Leia’s lightsaber and she also departs to fight Hux after learning about his plans. At the resistance base, Leia’s funeral is held. Poe is completely frustrated at himself for letting Leia and C-3PO die but Lando gives him a pep talk. Poe understands that Leia was so successful in her rebellion due to inspiring others and sends a broadcast to the entire galaxy to come join the Resistance against the First Order and save their homes(I imagine this speech to be like the Captain America speech from The Winter Soldier). The Resistance depart for the final battle. ACT 5 Finn and Rose infiltrate the First Order base to try and eliminate Hux and Phasma while Poe and other pilots decide to attack the Star Destroyers from the outside. Finn and Rose are captured again by Phasma and are about to be executed but Finn says he has a few final words. He looks to all the Stormtroopers and says that they were taken away from their families and brainwashed by the First Order to be soldiers but they could be so much more. Their purpose in life is more than to serve the First Order and each and every one of them should get to choose their own destiny. At first no trooper reacts but just as Finn is about to be shot, one trooper rebels against the execution. One by one all the Stormtroopers rebel and remove their masks until it’s a mutiny and there’s a civil war in the First Order. Finn and Rose escape but Phasma chases them to finally kill them. Kylo and Rey both arrive at the base and battle the Knights Of Ren as they both use Luke’s and Leia’s lightsabers. It’s a long fight but they manage to defeat all the Knights through teamwork. In space, all the people from across the galaxy arrive to help Poe defeat the Star Destroyers like the original movie. Meanwhile, Phasma and Finn duel on top of one of the Star Destroyers. Just as Finn is about to be sliced by Phasma’s swords, he uses the Force to summon a lightsaber confirming he is force sensitive. After a lengthy duel, Finn finally beats Phasma as she falls of the Star Destroyer into space. Poe reveals that despite so many fighters, the Resistance still can’t beat the Star Destroyers in a dog fight and the only way to win is to set a bomb manually on one of the Star destroyers which is strong enough to destroy all other Star destroyers in the area. However, they need one person to sacrifice themselves so all other Resistance pilots can escape. Rose volunteers as she remembers what Finn told her. You sometimes have to make sacrifices to help others. She sets off the bomb and she and Finn have a tearful goodbye(maybe they kiss) as the Resistance pilots along with Rey and Kylo leave. The bomb explodes as Hux watches his entire fleet turn into ashes and he also burns away. EPILOGUE The galaxy is saved! There are celebration across the galaxy. Rey, Finn and Poe celebrate together while Chewie finally gets his own medal. Kylo however is still unsure if he deserves to celebrate after breaking apart the galaxy. Behind him, the force ghost of Anakin Skywalker appears as he tells Kylo that he can always fix the galaxy he broke apart. We cut to a few months later where Finn and other former stormtroopers are fighting remaining First Order soldiers and Rey has set up a Jedi academy. We cut to Tatooine in a First Order base where several families are saved by a man as he defeats the First Order soldiers. One kid looks up to him and asks him “Aren’t you Kylo Ren? ”. The man looks to the side where he sees Han, Luke and Leia smiling at him(this finally shows the golden trio together in the sequel trilogy) as the man replies “No, I am Ben Solo” as he looks at the binary sunset. First thing I'll get out of the way - it's not quite like the Game of Thrones. It's more traditional fantasy. There's a bit more of a young-adult vibe. I don't have a problem with that or want to scare off potential readers... the books are enjoyable. What it means in practical terms is... there's absolutely no sex, and no swearing. There's some violence, which can get graphic, and I think that's a just a funny quirk of USA culture. We're OK with describing someone's head exploding, but uncomfortable describing someone's nipples getting sucked. There are times where I feel like this becomes the proverbial elephant in the room. A young woman sits on a guy's lap, kisses him for a while, then makes some comment like "let's not get distracted". Or a character is described as "swearing colorfully". This did bug me at times, because there's always going to be less impact in hearing something like "he made a lewd suggestion" vs. something like this (1:22). There's also just a whiff of Twilight in there, as we have a young wallflower who suddenly becomes the (literal) belle of the ball. Some paragraphs are devoted to her picking out gowns and realizing that all the popular rich people are talking about the mysterious pretty new girl. OK, so that being said... here's a quick rundown of the plot, spoiler-free. We learn about the world (known as the Final Empire) through the eyes of Vin, a timid teenage girl who's part of a thieving crew. They live in harsh, medieval society with strict class lines - you're nobility, or you're skaa. Life for the skaa is shit - they're peasants and slaves. Our first glimpse of their lives bring to mind images from US history: barebacked workers on a plantation, being whipped by an overseer on horseback. This system has been in place for 1, 000 years... created and enforced by the rarely-seen Lord Ruler. He's a mysterious god-king who rules from his keep in the capital city, and lets his Obligators (bureaucrats, basically) handle the day-to-day tasks of enforcing the law and facilitating trade. If there's a problem, he has a large army/police force at his disposal, and a handful of deadly Inquisitors. Inquisitors, by the way, are a terrifying (and gruesomely badass) concept: grim, powerful wizards with massive spikes driven through their eye sockets, who somehow still live and can see. Think Agent Smith meets Voldemort. It's made clear that for skaa, there's no fighting the system. They can't beat an army when they don't have weapons or training, and even if they could... the nobility can inherit specific magical abilities through their bloodlines... e. g. the ability to move metal, which effectively turns coins into bullets. Inquisitors possess magic that's even stronger, and the Lord Ruler's got unique abilities that are stronger yet, and he cannot be killed. So the situation is thoroughly hopeless. Naturally, there are people who believe otherwise. Enter Kelsier, the charismatic leader of a more heavy-duty thieving crew, who has accepted a job from the skaa underground to topple the final empire. Ostensibly they do this for a big payoff - Kelsier spent part of his life mining the precious rare metal Atium, before escaping from the pits, and is convinced the Lord Ruler has a huge stash of the stuff. But he's also taken on this job because he hates the system, and has a personal grudge with the Lord Ruler. And Kelsier might just have a chance, because he and his friends are some of the rare commoners with access to magic. Kelsier subcontracts Vin's crew, and she gets dragged into a world of conflict and magic that she never even knew existed. To describe the later books would somewhat require spoiling the ending of the first book, so I'll just say that their plan has all sorts of unintended consequences... there's a reason the Lord Ruler's empire has been stable for so long, and we find out his role goes beyond just preserving the class system. Threatening him, indirectly threatens the whole world. Things I liked: • The magic system is interesting and complex. It has fairly specific rules. The ability to use it is inherited, and you either get one specific magic ability (out of 10 or so) or you get them all. Only a handful of people get these powers, almost exclusively nobility, and they won't know about it until they 'snap'... meaning they go through some huge trauma that awakens the ability. Using these powers consume metal, which is ground into powder and ingested in a liquid. The necessary metals range from common-as-dirt steel to incredibly-rare atium. Some abilities are incredibly useful (increased strength, speed, agility, and healing... all from pewter) and some... not so much (e. gold lets you see the past). Magic is never really "free" and the Allomancers who use it must manage their metal reserves carefully, and be aware of negative side effects. The most powerful players in the books, are the ones who can somewhat break the rules or discover a new way of using their abilities. • There's a lot of hidden lore that gets gradually revealed over the course of 3 books... the source of the Lord Ruler's power, where magic comes from, the creation of certain magical races, the role of the metals, and some alternate methods of using magic. There's a lot of interesting backstory that keeps the book from being just "good guys with magic vs. bad guys with magic". • The characters are memorable and distinct. You can tell when a book's characters need work when you read their name and go "which one was that again? "... that's not an issue here. Kelsier is charming and sort of swashbuckling, but is quick (maybe too quick) to kill nobility and make ruthless choices. Vin is furtive and wary... her life has been one of privation, beatings, and betrayals. She trusts nobody, but part of her wants to. Marsh is grim, humorless. He has none of the charm of his brother. He tried for years to enlist Kelsier in the skaa rebellion, and now that it's finally happened, he doesn't trust Kelsier's motives. • We go through some plot twists and the author shows he's willing to kill off major characters. It keeps things fresh. • Just when you think they're winning, you realize there's more work to do, and the hardships have just begun. The author does a good job of making sure things never feel too easy, and manages to avoid abusing that sort of deus ex machina you see in other fantasy novels: "and then the hero drew on their power really hard, harder than ever, and blew up the bad guy". The good guys lose, get hurt, and are forced to run. • We get some small hints that this world might be somehow related to our own, but the author avoids some common fantasy tropes. It isn't alternate reality medieval england. It isn't the distant future. The sky is red. The plants are brown. There's perpetual mist at night. There aren't guns, magic swords, or steampunk trains. There's giants, but no elves or dwarven blacksmiths or dragons. The world is unique. Things I disliked: • Sometimes the author does that thing where characters seem to be made deliberately stupid... missing stuff that is obvious to the reader... so it can feel like a great triumph when they figure it out. For example, at one point Vin is stuck with a servant she doesn't want. The servant did something that bothers her, and she takes it out on them... speaking rudely to them, trying to ditch them, calling them by their race instead of their name, etc. When the servant responds in a less-than-enthusiastic way, she asks "why do you hate me? ". Duh. There's also a key revelation about how some powerful magic works, and the main characters take forever to figure it out. In fact, one of the important ones NEVER quite figures it out, someone else has to 'show' them. I gotta keep it vague for spoiler purposes, but just know that if you read this series, there will be times you're gonna want to yell at the characters. At times, it's like that feeling you get when the dumb disposable characters in a horror movie go into the dark haunted cabin. "OH COME ON! " • The books can get bogged down in boring discussions of politics, or warfare. Maybe they're just boring to me. I think it's more interesting when the characters are moving, like they're on a quest or exploring a new area. It really slows down when the main characters are at their base in the capital city, and dealing with problems like supply lines, lack of food, elections, etc. It's clear their fate hinges on some crucial magic stuff, some hidden ancient lore. So all that mundane stuff feels like it doesn't advance the plot. Of course, the same could easily be said about GoT. • There's a ton of time spent on the protagonists, not so much invested in the antagonists. The Lord Ruler is not fleshed out, he's just this ethereal, invincible guy with an interesting backstory. The backstory is explained in bits and pieces, as if we're given a handful of sentences from a history book. But it would have been nice if we a switched perspectives to the past, and got to live through his rise to power and great betrayal. There's another evil force at play too... something that influences the lord ruler... and that force is given a personality. The personality is, unfortunately, straight anime-villain. 'oh child, did you really think you could defeat me? '. There's a whole mythology here (including a powerful force for good) and all we're really told is this evil force destroys because that's its nature. There's a powerful force for good, too, and that force is given no personality at all.
