You know it's a cool movie but I swear I imagined this movie before the trailer even came out and I hoped that one day I would be able to make a movie like this so even though these are other people who made this it's hard not to feel like my idea was stolen but again I know that these people just had the same idea.
Why do they sound like people pretending to be British soldiers.

Burn the history books and lock up everyone who is even one shade too light! Seriously though how dumb is this. I mean I'm cool with the race of the character being different in certain circumstances but that's more comic book movies and definitely not historical ones.

I sat in a packed yet silent theater this morning and watched, what I believe to be, the next Academy Award winner for the Best Picture. I'm not at all a fan of war movies but I am a fan of great movies. and 1917 is a great movie.
I have never been so mesmerized by set design and direction, the mass human emotion of this film is astonishingly captured and embedded magically in the audience. It keeps running through my poetry and beauty intertwined with the raw misery of war.
Treat yourself. see this movie.

I hear people saying they dont get why when he saw the soldier he didnt run, but imagine being in that war, seeing a blazing city I think he was almost in a trance until the guy shot it kinda woke him up.

Nice to see WW1 making a comeback on film.
It's beautifully made and has just enough action to keep tensions high and tug at the heartstrings, intimately depicting the human cost of war. I got emotional a few times.
I do caution that as a War movie, it's more of a drama than an action film. Sure there's action and suspense, and some thrills, but this isn't Saving Private Ryan or Dunkirk from a visceral standpoint. It's smaller in both scale and scope.
1917 follows a couple of soldiers as they journey to the front line carrying information which could save over a thousand of their fellows soldiers' lives. if they get there in time.
It's in the aforementioned scale and scope where 1917 falls short of being great. The main plot of the movie suffered for not being big enough or feeling important enough. There's no storming of the beaches at Normandy. No rousing Winston Churchill speech at the end. The film doesn't connect the events it depicts into their greater significance in the war. Again, it felt small scale and narrow in scope.
But to reiterate, I very much liked it. It's a lovely film filled with tension and emotion, think Kubrick's Paths of Glory without the 10/10 ending. Great work by all involved: Director Sam Mendes, Composer Thomas Newman, the whole cast and crew.
One of the years best films, probably at the bottom of my top ten.
This is the best war movie I have seen in my life, and probably one of the best movies overall as well. My hands literally ached afterwards from where I was clenching my fists so tight due to the sheer anxiety caused by this film. I also cried. At least three times. The fact that they cast relative unknowns in the role was perfect as you were so immersed in their characters and they were so believable which wouldnt have been the same if they were famous a-listers. The cinematography. Every frame was a literal masterpiece and Roger Deakins is the talent of the century when it comes to cinematography. Another Oscar is not enough for this man. Finally the atmosphere and scale of this film is almost unbelievable. Never have I been so immersed in a movie, my concentration didnt break for a single moment and that is something that is very hard to achieve for a director. Sam Mendes has cemented himself as one of the best working today and he deserves all the credit he can get. PS: I also appreciated the last name of the main character, its a good day to be a Scofield.
