And the answer is I have no idea! This book was no exception I found Rachel’s story so riveting.. I loved this story that slips easily from Rachaels story to Sophies story in modern day. Racheal is Sophie's grandmother and she enjoys finding out more about her life after she escaped from Hungary in the 50's with her own father. They spent a thrilling summer in Italy where you could feel the sights and smells and the wonderful cottage by the sea. Rachael's senses are totally caught up in the wonderful setting with the hint of romance with a delicious Italian. I also enjoyed reading about.. I liked the story told in dual timeliness, in two different generations, Rachel in 1958 and Sophie in the present day. Both the grandmother and the granddaughter went through their own heartaches, and it was so easy to connect with them and immerse in their story. One photograph takes the story to Italy where the secrets are revealed. Overall, a little slower than what I am used to, but a fun read. Usually I don't really like historical stories, but something in the blurb made me change my mind and read it. I am so happy that I did. It is simply gorgeous. I love the way the past and the present are alternated and slowly you see the two parts come together and become one. It's always nice to learn something from a book especially when it's woven into the story and you don't get the feeling you are back at school. I was so fascinated by the part about the silk that I looked it up. This book.. Rachael's story takes her from Communist Hungary in the 1950's, to a refugee camp in Austria, to London; on to New York and back to London, Rachael's story is beautifully told, atmospheric as well as with well defined characters. Alternately, we follow her granddaughter Sophie's story, as she navigates balance between work, starting a family, and marriage. Rachael faces many challenges in her lifetime, suffering losses, yet savoring life in its fullness. I was absorbed in both stories, and had a.. I was delighted to see that with her new book The Photograph Debbie Rix has moved away from the stories she had set in much earlier centuries and moved forward to 1950's Italy. I have loved all her previous books but this one proved to be my most favourite of all. All the elements that I adored that were apparent in her earlier books are still here and the dual timeline aspect of the plot has still been retained and this makes for an excellent although at times heartbreaking read. The book opens.. I really enjoyed this lovely book, with Sophie and her grandmother Rachael as the central characters. The story is set during the present day for Sophie, and the late 1950's/early 1960's for Rachael, which made it very interesting to me. Rachael has had a very tumultuous life, having to leave Hungary in a hurry with not much more than the clothes on her back. Luckily, both her and her father were able to leave unharmed and they settled in London. Decades later, Sophie is trying to make her life.. Absolutely beautiful! This author is one of my favourites and she never fails to deliver! She writes about the past and different parts of the world with such authority and heart that I am blown away, transported and always learn something new. A stunning story that took me over. Heartwarming and hopeful. Absolutely beautifully written. This author is one of the best historical fiction writers writing now. And this book is her best - a masterpiece. Absolute perfection! I absolutely loved the main characters of Rachel and Sophie. Rachel had to flee her home country (Hungary) with her father, because their lives were in danger due to their support for the opposition. My heart ached for Rachel because she ends up having to leave her surroundings and everything she is familiar.. This is a very compelling book that deals with love and heartbreak. It also deals a little with archeology. It is set in England and Sardinia as well as New York City. It is the story of a family over generations. It is told through the eyes of Sophie in 2016 and her grandmother Rachael in the 1950’s. Sophie was desperate to have a child with her husband Hamish. She was ready to do anything to have one; but he.. I have very mixed feelings regarding this book. If I had to answer with a simple yes or no, I’d say, yes, I liked it. The story is enthralling it’s impossible not to be drawn into it from the very first chapter. The well balanced alternation between past and present makes the story very attractive to any reader, even those who wouldn’t normally read historical fiction. She accompanies her father to an archeological dig in Sardinia, where she learns about the local "sea silk" makers. Her timeline included stops in NYC in the early 60s back to London. Sophie, who we later discover is Rachel's granddaughter, has the modern timeline. She's struggling to have a child as well as finishing.. This is a charming story told in two different timelines-the 1950s by Rachel (the grandmother) and 2017 by Sophie (the granddaughter). Both stories are compelling and sad and I’m not ashamed to admit caused me to shed a tear. It is an easy read of how our lives are interwoven, of sadness and loss. The most appealing part of the story for me was when Rachel accompanied her father, a professor of archaeology to the island of Sant’Antioco just off Sardinia for a year. Slow dancing with the most gorgeous lover in an old torn down ball room. | Nell Minow May 17, 2019 Two pictures are taken at the beginning of “Photograph, ” a return to Mumbai for “The Lunchbox” writer/director Ritesh Batra, whose more recent films have included films based on English-language novels “ The Sense of an Ending ” and “ Our Souls at Night. ”  As “Photograph” begins, we see Rafi ( Nawazuddin Siddiqui), who takes photos in front of Mumbai’s Gateway monument. He sells his services to tourists by promising that “years from now, when you look at the photograph you will feel the sun on your face, the wind on your hair, and you will hear those voices again. ” If they do not have a picture, he tells them, “it will be all gone. ” Advertisement Elsewhere in Mumbai, a man takes a picture with a phone. What he is looking at is fuzzy, but we will learn that it is a poster for a school, featuring his daughter, the star student Miloni ( Sanya Malhotra). She is studying for an accounting degree. Miloni and Rafi meet when she visits the Gateway and agrees to let him take her picture. She is called away by her family before he can put it in an envelope for her. He hears (amusingly, over and over again from a whole series of people) that his grandmother has stopped taking her medicine until he makes some progress on getting married. So he impulsively sends her a photograph of Miloni as proof that he is seeing someone. Unfortunately, this is such exciting news that his grandmother (Farrukh Jaffar) decides to come see the girl for herself. He then has to try to find Miloni and persuade her to pretend to be the girl he told his grandmother he was dating. At least that is what we infer. We never see that conversation. The charm of this film, which may take some getting used to for those accustomed to spell-it-out storytelling, is that it takes place in those quieter liminal moments, and it is just right for this story's delicacy. So are the exquisitely framed shots and the loving portrayal of the city of Mumbai.  Siddiqui and Malhotra are well suited to the gentle tone of the film, both quietly expressive in scenes where everything is conveyed through posture and eyes. There is a fairy tale quality to the story. In a city of more than 18 million people, Rafi is able to find Miloni (with some help from that billboard picture). Later in the film, he even gets some supernatural advice. Even Rafi’s crowded sleeping quarters are lit to seem almost magical. After all, this is a movie set in the present day where an old-fashioned paper photograph, ejected while you wait from a portable printer, has enormous power. Miloni says that she saw someone who looks happier and prettier than she has ever been in her photograph. Can it be because that's how Rafi sees her? Or is it a glimpse of a life she never dared to imagine for herself? We hear a casual reference at a family dinner to a time when Miloni wanted to be an actress, before her family pushed her to study accounting. As herself, she is so introverted and unsure that she cannot even tell Rafi or her mother what color she likes. But pretending to be the girl he wrote about, she can come up with a dramatic backstory for the character she is playing. And seeing herself differently, in the photograph and in the persona she creates for Rafi’s grandmother, inspires her to think about other lives and envision a different one for herself. She asks her family’s maid about life on a farm. She can tell Rafi about missing the cola she used to share with her grandfather. This is a film that ends with the two characters walking out of a movie theater, with one of them saying, “The stories are all the same in movies these days. ” It may be that the stories in movies are all the same.
