Yet when he considers selling up to spend more time with his wife Ros (Michelle Dockery), a possible investor (Jeremy Strong), a Chinese gangster (Henry Golding), a tabloid editor (Eddie Marsan) and a private eye (Hugh Grant) all begin to circle Mickey’s empire. The Gentlemen is Guy Ritchie back in his manor. After the big-budget misfire of King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword and the big-budget success of Aladdin, Ritchie’s 11th feature returns to his roots: the London-based crime milieu of Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch and RocknRolla. If it lacks the fizz of his best efforts, it’s an entertaining mix of convoluted plotting, colourful criminals, a heightened feel (“Fuck off back from whence he came”) and pig-fucking gags. In outline, the body of the story is simple enough. American ex-pat and Rhodes scholar Mickey Pearson ( McConaughey) graduates from Oxford with a nifty sideline in selling weed to posho students, building a marijuana empire under the grounds of Britain’s filthy rich. Yet wishing to dedicate himself to the love of his life Ros ( Dockery), he looks to offload his farms to Jewish investor Mathew ( Strong). Word gets out that Mickey wants to sell, attracting the attention of debonair triad Dry Eye ( Golding), a “Chinese James Bond”. Then all hell breaks loose. There's lots of fun to be had. Yet, in true Ritchie style, this is complicated by the fact that we are told the story through the eyes of scuzzy private investigator Fletcher ( Grant), who is relaying the plot to Mickey’s No. 2 Ray ( Hunnam) in order to blackmail Ray’s boss. Fletcher has fashioned the events into a movie script (named ‘Bush’) and his pitch sees him as an unreliable narrator — embellishing bits, rewinding bits, even changing the format to anamorphic — as he spins the yarn. We know we can’t trust him as he thinks Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation is “a bit boring”. There’s interesting thematic material buried in here (the class divide, the mellowing qualities of middle age, the relationship between the media and the underworld), but Ritchie mostly ignores this in the rush to tell his story. As such, sidelines — Ray’s rescue of the drug-addicted daughter of one of Mickey’s benefactors, for instance — feel superfluous to the main plot, while key components, such as Mickey and Ros’ relationship, feel underserved. Still, there’s lots of fun to be had. Ritchie’s style may be more refined these days, but he has not matured enough to stop the carpet c-bombing, witty subtitles, animated maps, YouTube fight-porn parodies and Tarantino-esque digressions. McConaughey, Golding and Hunnam are all decent, but the best of the bunch are hanging around the edges: Grant’s bizarrely voiced sleaze-bucket PI (note his delight at Ray’s barbecue that warms your legs while it cooks the steaks), Colin Farrell having a ball in a check tracksuit as a boxing coach, and Dockery’s granite-hard gangster’s moll. “There’s fuckery afoot, ” she says at one point about Mickey’s predicament. It’s a pretty good tagline for Ritchie’s slippery, enjoyable flick. What it lacks in freshness and depth, The Gentlemen certainly makes up for in cartoon-y bluster and fun details. Welcome home, Mr. Ritchie. The gentlemen official trailer (2020. Daniel Craig: I would rather die than do another bond movie Universal: here's 20 million dollars. The gentlemen - cam trailer. A lot or a little? The parents' guide to what's in this movie. The film definitely has messages, but anything "positive" falls into gray areas. For instance, the movie is anti-heroin and cocaine but strongly pro-marijuana. Positive Role Models & Representations Story is about drug lords, but it portrays them in a counter-stereotypical way. A female garage owner employs mostly female mechanics, is a shrewd businessperson. Mickey may not be the greatest guy, but he's in a loving, committed relationship. Coach trains at-risk boys to keep them off the street, but how he shows them to make amends is iffy. These rare instances are set among a lot of criminal/dodgy behavior. Opens with someone getting shot in the head. Graphic violence continues throughout: shootings, threats with knives, beatings, lots of blood. Other violence includes poisonings, long falls, a rape. A woman sensually grabs her husband's crotch. Conversation is layered with innuendo. Off-camera bestiality played for shock and comedy. Characters curse constantly, especially "f--k. " Men frequently call people they don't like "c--ty. " Other words include "a--holes, " "c--k" "d--k, " "piss, " and "s--t. " Frequent use of slurs, including "Chinaman. " Sexual terms used to mean something else. Drug lords are rich and talk about deals in terms of nine figures. Money is equated with power and style, which is translated into high-fashion clothing, watches, homes, grills, cars, bars, and cigars. Drinking, Drugs & Smoking Film takes place in business world of drug manufacturing, dealing. Characters who do cocaine, heroin, meth are considered lowly, stupid, classless, but pot is considered good, and an argument is made a couple of times that it's harmless. A joint is rolled on camera. All the rich men smoke cigars, often in moments of power and bonding. Several scenes take place in a bar with "Gritchie" (for "Guy Ritchie") beer on tap, and characters regularly drink beer and hard liquor. What parents need to know Parents need to know that The Gentlemen is a Guy Ritchie -directed crime-action movie about a very cool drug supplier named Mickey Pearson ( Matthew McConaughey). Mickey, his wife Rosalind ( Michelle Dockery), and his employees are portrayed as smart, sharp, strong, skilled, and generally enviable. Like Ritchie's other films, this one is incredibly violent, with graphic shootings, knives, beatings, a rape, long falls, and lots of blood. Ritchie's values -- hard drugs are stupid, pot is harmless compared to other vices, taxes are out of control, and if you ban guns, then you're defenseless against criminals -- are on his sleeve in this film, but parents may not always agree with them. The script also pokes at political correctness by including words that seem intended to make viewers ask questions like "Hold up, is that racist? Is that homophobic? " (in fact, there's a whole conversation about what's racist and what's not). Extremely strong, coarse language includes "f--k, " "c--t, " and more, a woman fondles her husband over his pants, and there's an off-screen act of bestiality. In other words, this film -- while thoroughly entertaining for adults -- definitely isn't for kids. Stay up to date on new reviews. Guy Ritchie 's crime comedy won't be making any "best family movies of the year" lists, which may be the best marketing it can get. After a decade spent making more commercial films like Aladdin, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, and Sherlock Holmes, Ritchie returns to his core skill set: telling violent stories about thugs, criminals, fighters, and the underworld. He's clearly been feeling pent up, as it all comes out (literally) guns blazing. The Gentlemen has a clever concept, snappy dialogue, creative characters, and stupendous style. In a meta turn, it's delivered as a mystery narrated by a sleazy private investigator named Fletcher (Grant has rarely been better), who's turned the events into a script and peppers his "pitch" of sorts with filmmaking references. It's a whirlwind of moving parts, but the audience never gets lost in the tornado of events. The characters are all on the wrong side of the law and life, and adults can appreciate the film for what it is and see that crime doesn't pay, even when it does. That said, younger viewers may buy into the movie's pro-weed, pro-gun attitude. While Mickey says that his "hands are dirty, " the ultimate takeaway is that coming up with an orderly, principled pot-farm business wasn't just OK, it was shrewd. In another situation, Rosalind nags her husband about having a gun because it's a ticket to prison; later, she's only able to protect herself with his gun, but is still woefully unprepared. Both of these suggest that following the law can hold you back or even hurt you -- and if you're smart, you work around it. They say a gentleman always remembers, but when it comes to picking up trains of thought from pop culture, so do kids. Talk to your kids about... Families can talk about the role of guns  The Gentlemen. Do you agree with how they're portrayed? What's the impact of media violence on kids? How are drugs depicted here? Are there consequences for their use? Why does that matter? Would you say any of the characters here are "good" or "bad"? Do you think it's more interesting to have characters who are clearly moral or immoral, or is it better for them to be a mixed bag? What positive character strengths and life skills do they display? How are drinking and smoking depicted? Are they glamorized? Why do you think the script includes such strong language? What do you think the screenwriter is trying to say by using insensitive language to describe people? Or the scene where the characters discuss what is and isn't racist? Guy Richie has been going through a somewhat renaissance of late, after 11 years away from the British crime genre he has finally had the faith to bring out a new adventure, but the reel question is will this drug-filled gangster flick have Layers to this Cake or be a total Snatch? I will be the first to admit, I didn't like Aladdin. I remember calling it "the death of Disney" I realise now that was wishful thinking. Disney is immortal. However, I can't dispute money and Aladdin made that, which is why most were surprised that it was announced that Richie's next venture (The Gentleman) was going to be something altogether more in keeping with his previous reputation. You can feel through the lens that Guy Richie is enjoying coming back to the fold, he uses every trick and joke to emphasis this. The entire premise of the film is that Fletcher (played by an outstandingly slimy Hugh Grant) is pitching his idea for a film to Raymond (Charlie Hunnam) something I am positive Guy Richie has done multiple times before. The story is complete with a reshoot of scenes (when Fletcher diverts too far from the truth) and even a comment about aspect rations for the picture. The title of Fletcher's film he wishes to make? Bush. Something tells me that in a drawer in Guy Richie's house is the same title for Lock Stock and Two Smokin' Barrels. It's nice to see that Richie has learned something in the intervening years between the truly dreadful Revolver and today. Richie has learned how to keep current with both tone and characters while keeping the more classical aspects of the genre intact. It's as if he has wholesale lifted characters from The Long Good Friday and transported them to the new millennium to face some of the more unexpected issues around. There is a moment where Raymond is faced off with several youths carrying knives while trying to acquire a mobile phone with incriminating evidence on, an issue I'm positive Colin never had to consider. The characters have too evolved with the times as opposed to the usual cut and paste hard as nails men, we are given a wide variety of parts to invest in. The most notable 4 are Raymond, Fletcher, Micky and The Coach. Each of these acts are unique, Raymond, for example, has an obsessive-compulsive disorder or The Coach who trains street kids to be better men both inside and outside the ring. These are troupes we have not seen from Richie before, he has grown. What has also grown is Richie's ability to tell a story, while films like Lock Stock, Snatch and even Rock'n'Rolla still stand up, you never realised how limited Richie's abilities were until they are highlighted by a movie like The Gentleman. In his previous work, it would be fair to say he is overly indulgent in a world he is clearly in love with. In The Gentleman, Richie chooses the high road giving us only flickers of the gangster underbelly while never letting up on the violence. The Gentleman is the perfect tonic of comedy, surprises, and outstanding acting. Like a good malt, Richie had to go through a few barrels first. 10 Weeds out of 10. The gentlemen movie cast. The director goes back to his crime caper roots, firing Matthew McConaughey and Colin Farrell at Downton’s Michelle Dockery and a cockney Hugh Grant. Sort that out G uy Ritchie is course-correcting. After spending the last few years churning out largely anonymous big-budget FILM seemingly to order, he has now returned to his roots. The Gentlemen is a Guy Ritchie film in the classic sense, in that it looks like a better-executed version of something that Danny Dyer would have starred in seven or eight years ago. It’s a crime caper, it’s set in London, and it stars everyone. No, really, it stars everyone. And better yet, if the trailer is any indication, everyone gets to do doing something that’s differently but equally preposterous. Here, for your pleasure, is a ranking of all them from least preposterous to most. 7. OK, when I said that everyone had been given something to do, I had clearly forgotten about Colin Farrell. Because, unless I’m very much mistaken, Guy Ritchie just let Colin Farrell walk on to the set in his own clothes and act as himself using his own accent. I can’t say this for a fact, but I’d be willing to bet money that Colin Farrell is currently somewhere in the world wearing this exact outfit and pointing at someone in this exact way. Not very preposterous at all. 6. Matthew McConaughey is also in The Gentlemen, filling the role of the Roving American Superstar. Snatch had Brad Pitt. Revolver had Ray Liotta. RocknRolla had, um, Jeremy Piven. And now there’s McConaughey. In this regard, his inclusion in the film isn’t actually very preposterous at all. However, you will note that in The Gentlemen he appears to be dressed as Guy Ritchie. It’s a bit preposterous, but not that preposterous. 5. Henry Golding also stars in The Gentlemen. He isn’t given a tremendous amount to do in the trailer, but based on his past work I’m going to guess that his character is dead and appears to McConaughey’s character as a ghost because McConaughey received his heart after they were both in some sort of tragic Christmas tree accident. Relatively preposterous. 4. Now we’re getting to the good stuff. Michelle Dockery is here, and at first sight all looks normal. But then she opens her mouth and, well, it’s hard to say exactly what comes out. She sounds like a TOWIE cast member, had TOWIE been set in a low-security prison. She sounds like she’s auditioning for a cartoon about wartime spivs. She sounds like the goblin who lives on Kat Slater’s shoulder and advises her in times of moral uncertainty. She sounds like Guy Ritchie told her that he’ll dock her pay every time she visibly opens her mouth. It’s great, but it’s preposterous. 3. And then Hugh Grant opens his mouth. Now, it is an unarguably good thing that Hugh Grant enjoys acting again. It is an especially good thing that his matinee idol looks have faded enough to allow him to become the character actor he always wanted to be. I have no doubt that the best work of Hugh Grant’s career hasn’t even happened yet. But this is just violently preposterous. He’s got a little beard. He’s got a high-pitched cockney accent. It’s as if he was aiming for Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast but coughed and accidentally ended up hitting David Beckham from 1999. It is preposterous to the Nth degree, and I am kind of here for it. 2. It took me until his name was flashed up on screen to work out that this is Charlie Hunnam. I thought it might have been Nick Frost at first, or Shia LaBeouf, or any number of other people. Now, clearly, he looks preposterous here. But trust me, you could listen to his accent for a thousand years and still not be able to confidently place it. He might be a cockney, or he might be Welsh, or he might be from Liverpool, or he might be from Newcastle, or he might be German. There is honestly no way to tell. I’ll assume that it’s deliberate because, otherwise, yeesh. 1. And finally, the most preposterous of them all, Jeremy Strong as Jeff Goldblum. Incredible. The gentlemen streaming. How much blood do they drink? I bet a lot. So we might have seen it all before, but Ritchie is on form again with a tried and tested mix of stellar cast, using the dialogue to its best. Hugh Grant stood out for me as he's made the shift from slightly edgy and nervous English chap to a run of really decent roles that he can sink his more mature teeth into. From Paddington 2 to this; he's versatile! Excellent editing strengthens the tale told and kept me intrigued enough as the usual Ritchie masterclass in a twisting and turning plot unfolds. Formulaic? Well, maybe, but the formula works. It's a geezers' playground of hazardous rides. Nice to see so many familiar faces and each service the screenplay to make a very creditable return to what Ritchie does best. Sadly, there's no Vinnie Jones, but hey, it's a great film and I would even see it a second time. The gentlemen 2020. The gentlemen budget. The gentlemen toddlers song. The gentlemen song.
