Turn it off. How? Well it's only part of the job. And the other part makes it all worth it. I had been in the job for the best part of the year before my boss asked me to stay late one night. Usually I prepared the deceased and left promptly at 5pm (unless I was on call for collection). I knew what this meant. Or at least, I thought I did. My boss was the only one who ever actually conducted the cremations. He had said he felt it was his duty, as the owner and the face of the mortuary - and he would say a few words privately as he turned the key into the mechanism to begin the process at the end of the night. That night, a long time ago now, I found out the truth. I was surprised to enter the room where the cremations happened to find a kind of seating gallery opposite the furnace. Luxe, red velvet recliner seats - and in the corner, a small, vintage drinks trolley hosting a crystal decanter with a deep caramel coloured liquid. My boss poured me a whiskey and we made a toast - to Mrs Newman - our latest client. A sign of respect, toasting the life of the woman - but once I had sipped the drink and felt it warm my throat, my boss told me to sit. I could never have predicted what happened next. It is one of the great secrets of the trade. Why does it happen? We don't know. How? We don't know that either. But I have my own theories. You see, when a person is cremated, something evaporates from their burning corpse. It starts as a thin wisp and looks just like a small strand of silvery smoke. But if you really concentrate it begins to grow. Images begin to form. And for the time that the deceased burns, the fire growing hot and red, the strands delicately paint a picture of the life of the deceased. The highs, and lows. My boss and I often pondered the phenomena, and it seems likely that it led to the coinage of the turn of phrase 'life passing before your eyes' - only.. at this point your eyes are smouldering into ash. I remember my boss asked me once, what I thought it meant. I said I didn't know, and I don't.. but I like to think it is the deceased's final voice. Passing on one last message to leave their mark in the world. Over the years, I witnessed a variety of stories. Just like a world of film, I saw great tragedies, love stories, thrillers. Some held shocking secrets and some were sadly mundane. But alas, the ending was always the same. A doctor - detailing a prognosis. An accident on a motorway. But then always.. A dark fog begins to descend and just as the tale ends, the wisps evaporate and then it is gone. Only once has it ended differently. And I fear it will trouble me until the end of my days. It was a day just like any other. My boss had long since retired and I was about to settle down with a drink as the latest client showed me their story. A young thing, died far too young from a sudden illness. It made me think about how fleeting life can be, perhaps it was time for me to find my own protégé to follow in my footsteps. As the flames licked her corpse, the story unfolded. Nothing miraculous, teen love, college life and travels before the illness set in. I felt her worry that she wouldn't be able to achieve her dreams. Saw through her eyes the reaction of her parents as the news set in that she was unlikely to make her 25th birthday. But what I saw next made my skin crawl. It was unmistakeable. My face, looming over with a make up brush in hand - brow furrowed in concentration. The pale silk of the lining of the coffin lid as it closed over. And finally, the inferno of flames that enveloped her. By the time I realised what it meant, it was too late.
