I kinda get what they're trying to go for here but at the same time this almost seems like a movie a dem would make, Fox news is more of a conservative network but they made the guys on the network douche bags to try and portray all guys like that when it comes to the news, Kind of interesting movie but not sure if I'd actually see it due to it's possible subtle insertion of democratic policies. I've been a Wilderness Reclamation stan since the card was spoiled and have been working on Nexus if Fate and Wilderness Reclamation decks on Arena (the only platform on which I currently play Magic) since Allegiance went live trying to thoroughly break the card. Some of you may have seen my Bant Nexus thread; that was the obvious starting point given the existence and dominance of Teferi over the last season, but after many iterations, even straying into four-colors to splash Expansion // Explosion, the deck never felt as focused as I needed it to in order to make WotC feel bad about their design decisions and farm some Arena Gold. Enter Ali Aintrazi's BO1 Simic Nexus list. After stomping a bunch of competitive events on Arena with the deck and essentially only losing to the aggressive builds of RDW (thanks, u/ADustedEwok, for introducing that beauty to the format), I realized that this was the direction to go, and began developing the deck for the more competitive BO3. The key to understanding why Simic is better than Bant is simple: the deck wants to go infinite with Reclamation and Nexus as quickly as possible. It's not a turbo fog deck or a control deck, it's a combo deck with controlling elements similar to Modern Storm or even Splinter Twin that's trying to survive until you start taking all of the turns, land a Krasis somewhere in there (which usually happens to draw you a Nexus) and swing in a couple times for the win. The most effective thing about the deck is that the win becomes increasingly deterministic the more turns you take in a row. If you combo off with a flipped Azcanta and can string together two turns with Nexus while Impulsing and drawing three or four cards from Memorials and Insights each turn, you get your deck small enough that you're almost guaranteed to be able to find another Nexus, as well as more Reclamations as you loop through to untap and filter with Azcanta. Behold the fruits of my labor. Here's a breakdown of the card choices, a few notable omissions, and a very preliminary sideboard guide: Main Deck Creatures (7) 4x Frilled Mystic: An unconditional counterspell that costs four mana, which happens to be exactly how much you untap on the turn after casting Reclamation and happens to leave behind a body that can (and has) doubled as a win-con once you begin taking all of the turns? Sign me up. You can and should trim some of these for more efficient counters in the control match up and the mirror, but overall Mystic is an amazing tempo play and blocks fine in a pinch. 3x Hydroid Krasis: I love this boy. It's the perfect win con for the deck since it draws while leaving behind a body and it scales very nicely in the early game. Don't be afraid to cast one for x=2 to slow down an attacker and do a little filtering. Having multiples allows you to filter them to the yard with Azcanta early. Spells (20) 4x Blink of an Eye: A fantastic tempo card that has a ton of extra utility, not least of which is taking full advantage of untapping with four mana after casting Reclamation. I've used these to rebuy Frilled Mystics for extra counters, saved Reclamations with the bounce, and simply used them on two to force an opponent to recast a spell and buy myself a lot of time. Can be cut against control decks that aren't playing white for more counters (as this is the deck's only answer to Ixalan's Binding). 4x Growth Spiral: Turn three Wilderness Reclamation enabler that also filters. Pay attention to which land you play on turn one, as you always want UG untapped on turn two to enable this play. 4x Root Snare: This isn't a turbo fog deck, but you have to respect the emerging Gruul and Rakdos lists that can put a hell of a lot of power on the field very quickly, and I'm never unhappy to see one of these in my opener in game one. Post-board, these are often fully swapped out for Negates. 4x Chemister's Insight: Another impressive four mana Instant-speed play after untapping with Reclamation that both digs to the key enchantment and helps maintain infinity once you begin to go off. Flipping one into the graveyard with Search for Azcanta always feels good. 4x Nexus of Fate: Hello, half of WotC's biggest design mistake of the season! Remember to threaten this once you hit seven mana even if you don't have a Reclamation; against control, casting one of these on the end of the opponent's turn presents them with a lose-lose situation, either giving you two turns to stick a Reclamation or forcing them to tap out, which they very much do NOT want to do at any point. Enchantments (7) 3x Search for Azcanta: The enchantment side of this card is good, but the flipped land is arguably one-third of the combo kill. Untapping with Reclamation allows you to use the Impulse every turn without losing mana. I don't need to explain why this is good. 4x Wilderness Reclamation: Floating mana and untapping to cast a Nexus with fewer than 7 lands on the battlefield is a truly great feeling. Remember to always float all of your mana, as often times you'll underestimate just how much mana this generates when nearly all of your spells and effects can be cast at Instant speed. If you're on Arena, get used to using Full Control mode during your entire turn, as the stop system is well and truly bugged. Land (26) 1x Arch of Orazca: The poor man's Azcanta hurts your Frilled Mystic but otherwise is relatively free in the deck. 4x Memorial to Genius: Another Azcanta-like land that often taps for mana that is then spent on its ability after untapping with Reclamation. Don't underestimate how many cards you can draw with this and Reclamation. 4x Breeding Pool, 4x Hinterland Harbor, 1x Simic Guildgate, 7x Island, 5x Forest: You really want to be able to produce UG on turn 2 and this mana base is designed to do that as frequently as possible. Tapped lands don’t feel as bad as they normally would with Growth Spiral and Reclamation, but early land sequencing with the deck is key. Sideboard 2x Spell Pierce/2x Quench: Tech against spell-heavy RDW builds that come in over some Frilled Mystics and/or Root Snares. Spell Pierce comes in against the Nexus mirror, where the game becomes about who can cast a Reclamation with protection first. 4x Negate: Comes in against control for Root Snares. 4x Carnage Tyrant: I’m not sure if this is correct but I’ve brought them in against some creature-light control builds when the post-board games become counter wars over Reclamation. 3x Pause for Reflection: Better than Blink and some number of Frilled Mystic against certain aggro builds like mono green, where fogging for a couple is enough to go infinite. Notable Omissions: Karn, Scion of Urza: A good card that I used in the early build and BO1 but found to be much worse than another Island and a fourth Blink in BO3. The deck doesn’t need another finisher and Karn’s uptick is surprisingly awkward, to the point that a kicker Blink is almost always better. Gift of Paradise: Simply too slow. The deck lacks 3-drops but has Growth Spiral and enough tap lands that you usually go from 2 to 4 mana anyway. I tried it in the sideboard against RDW but found that countering a spell to live another turn without losing a whole one to ramping was much more effective. Match Ups: Non-Nexus Control: I’ve lost exactly one game in my six or seven matches against control and it came on the back of my opponent swinging in multiple times with a pair of Thieves of Sanity. The game becomes about landing a Reclamation and eventually you get enough mana to play and protect it at the same time, after which the game ends very quickly. Thought Erasure is annoying but as long as your opponent isn’t putting you under much pressure this deck quickly rebuilds thanks to Insight, Azcanta, and Memorial. Nexus decks: Who can land Reclamation first? This build eats the standard Nexus decks alive since it doesn’t waste any spots on creature or Planeswalker removal and gets even more streamlined post-board with Negates and Quenches. Be patient and draw your enchantments and the game is yours. Aggro decks (Selesyna, Gruul, Boros, Mono-Green): Congrats, you’re playing turbo fog tempo for a few turns before comboing off. Bring in more fogs and make sure you can protect your enchantments against removal and it’s not hard. Blink of an Eye buys a ton of time in these matchups, especially bouncing mana dorks and Rythm of the Wild. Red Deck Wins: Their nut draw will beat any stumbles and vice versa. Postboard, Spell Pierce and Quench help keep you alive early until you can combo off. Keep Spear Spewer off the battlefield if at all possible and be aware of the multiple builds: Big Red is a cakewalk, creature-heavy aggro requires some fogs, while the straight burn deck is the toughest matchup cuz of its explosiveness. So there you have it. Build the deck, tinker with the sideboard, and enjoy breaking the format over your knee until Nexus catches a ban for Reclamation’s sins. EDIT 1/24: I played through a Traditional Play league with Ali’s BO3 list and, despite going 4-2 with a couple close losses for the matches, I have to say I disagree with some of his choices and think there’s room for improvement. I lost to Bant Nexus (the games were literally decided by who was on the play with a Growth Spiral, not a good sign for the future of the meta but whatever) and Jund when I stumbled on lands (see below), and beat u/ADustedEwok ’s RDW, Simic Nexus (he sideboarded in a ton of aggressive Adapt creatures instead of counters), Golgari Midrange, and Esper Control (this was a fun, close game, as he had enchantment removal main deck but was a little too light on win cons, which gave me time to set up and go infinite). Firstly, 25 lands with a whopping 7 lands that always come into play tapped is just plain bad. The deck NEEDS to hit untapped sources on land drops 2 and 4 and with a full set of Hinterland Harbor the Guildgates were extra painful. I lost a few games because I was unable to play an untapped land and drop Reclamation on curve, which put me very far behind, and a couple times I only won because I got the exact untapped lands I needed off the top of the deck. I think 3 Blink/4 Search of Azcanta is a good split even with 26 lands because you always want to play Search or Growth Spiral on turn 2. Secondly, Precognitive Perception is cute but ultimately worthless. It’s a huge win more card in the deck and I only cast it once against Esper before siding it out every game. With all of the Memorials and Insights, you’re better off with a basic Island than Perception, because by the time you can cast a 5-mana cantrips you’ve already won the game. Thirdly, the sideboard. Pelakka Wurm is very good against RDW and I will keep using him, but a lot of the other stuff is too cute. Crushing Canopy seems a lot more useful than Sagittar’s Volley given the prevalence of other Nexus decks in the meta, although having a silver bullet against Mono-U isn’t the worst; I’m going to run a 2/1 split of Canopy/Volley. I really wanted at least one more fog in the sideboard and Mass Manipulation is another total win more card, especially because Rebuke does a better job once you hit 6 mana. Overall, I think the deck is moving in a good direction and the prevalence of Nexus decks on Arena is very satisfying after I called my shot about Reclamation when the card was spoiled. Keep innovating boys! EDIT 1/23: Our Lord and Savior updated the list for BO3. I recommend checking out his changes (he also cut Karn) and sideboard, which I will be exploring soon. EDIT 1/22: One of the main themes in the comments is “cutting Teferi is bad, ” so instead of writing the same response over and over I’ll put it in the OP again. This is a combo deck, not a control deck with a combo finish, and the Teferi builds sacrifice consistency for interaction. This build is relatively light on interaction and a slow hand without Growth Spiral, Blink, or Root Snare will lose to the nut draw from an aggro deck a lot of the time. But that’s why it runs those cards: to buy one or two crucial turns to set up the combo. You don’t need to exile your opponents creatures and trade them for basics if you’re only trying to survive a single turn before never letting them untap. The plan of the deck is simply to stick a Reclamation, untap with enough interaction to survive for a turn or two, then never let the opponent take another fair turn. Cards like Krasis and Blink allow you to maximize your extra turns in case you don’t go infinite, while Mystic just needs to counter a single spell on the turn after you stick Reclamation to earn its spot in the deck. I would invite the skeptics to run the deck through a few BO3 matches with this play pattern in mind before assuming I’m talking out of my ass. {Spiral} full*movie*yts Spiral OnLinE free.
