It's a bleak time of the year. Here we are in the dead of winter when studios dump their most questionable projects and it feels like the bright days of summer and fun blockbusters will never arrive. I'm here to tell you that there is hope. There are so many good movies on the horizon (some only a few weeks away). And you can look forward to some massive superhero blockbusters, big name comedies, and the long-awaited release of secretive projects, like Christopher Nolan's Tenet and Denis Villeneuve's Dune. Whether your speed is animation or action, sci-fi or spy movies, 2020 has a movie (or two or three) for everyone. Here are the films we're most looking forward to.
Bad Boys for Life (January 17)
After 17 years, we're overdue for a catch up with Mike Lowery and Marcus Burnett. Bad Boys for Life will be the third installment for the Bad Boys series, taking the boys into the dark world of a Miami drug cartel. Great to see Will Smith and Martin Lawrence again,
Birds of Prey (February 7)
Margot Robbie stars as Harley Quinn in her own breakout movie. She joins forces with Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya to protect a young girl in danger from crime lord Black Mask.
Sonic the Hedgehog (February 14)
The first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer dropped with a thud when fans disowned its “updated” Sonic, whose haunted expression and puzzlingly human teeth went viral (and not in the good way). After pushing the release date to 2020 and spending $5 million to re-animate Sonic, Paramount is back with a movie fans are pleased about, featuring Jim Carrey as iconic villain Dr. Robotnik. --Adrienne Westenfeld
Legally Blonde 3 (February 14)
What’s a better Valentine’s Day treat than a little bit of fluff? The third in the series of Legally Blonde movies is on the horizon as Reese Witherspoon is having a BIG moment. There isn’t much more to know other than the fact that Reese Witherspoon will be in it and that she will probably be posting more Instagram videos like this one.
Finding the Way Back (March 6)
It's a classic tale of down-and-out man who finds purpose coaching a sports team. Ben Affleck stars as Jack, an alcoholic fighting with his past demons, but when he's asked to coach a high school basketball team, he might learn a little about himself in the process.
Onward (March 6)
Pixar’s next offering features Tom Holland and Chris Pratt as two elfin brothers living in a contemporary world populated by magical creatures. When they bungle a spell to reanimate their dead father, bringing back only his lower extremities, they set off on a road trip in search of any remaining magic in the world that could bring him back fully. --A. W.
A Quiet Place: Part II (March 20)
John Krasinksi’s horror film, about a family who lives in a world alongside monsters who will attack at the slightest sound, was a box office smash. The sequel is bound to get just as many people in the seats, though RIP to Jim Halpert.
Disney's Mulan (March 27)
Children of the ’90s still love the original animated Disney film, about a young woman who fights in the Chinese army to defend her family. This generation of kids gets a live-action version, with Yifei Liu in the lead as Mulan.
The Lovebirds (April 3)
Don't you hate it when you're trying to enjoy a hot new relationship when you and your partner get framed for a hit and run and dragged into a bigger crime conspiracy? That's what happens in the new Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani comedy The Lovebirds.
The New Mutants (April 3)
Now that Maisie Williams has moved on from the Game of Thrones world, she’s free to explore others. In The New Mutants, Williams joins the Josh Boone-directed cast as a teen mutant who is locked in a facility trying to come to terms with who she is and what she can do with her powers.
No Time To Die (April 8)
Daniel Craig will return in his fifth and presumably final turn as the legendary spy James Bond. Directed by Cary Fukunaga, this is already promising to be a pretty incredible final act for Craig's 007, with Oscar-winner Rami Malek as the film's villain, Lashana Lynch picking up the 007 calling code, and a script punched up by the incomparable Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Black Widow (May 1)
In another stand alone superhero film starring a female character, Scarlett Johansson is Natasha Romanova, the talented spy and Avenger known as Black Widow. Maybe this will provide a little bit of closure for all the fans still grieving her Endgame death.
The Personal History of David Copperfield
From the mind of former Veep showrunner Armando Ianucci comes this satirical reimagining of Charles Dickens’ masterpiece, starring Dev Patel as the hapless protagonist. The uproarious trailer features a number of thespian heavy-hitters, including Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, and Ben Whishaw. W.
Spiral (May 15)
Do you need anything more than Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson? If that's not enough, the two star in this gritty crime horror-thriller in which Rock is a detective investigating a series of gruesome murders. Oh, and it's also their entrance into the Saw franchise.
Barbie (May 8)
The iconic doll is hitting the big screen in a project penned by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, with Gerwig reportedly attached to direct. Little is known about the film, but with Margot Robbie attached to star, we’re expecting great things. W.
Fast and the Furious 9 (May 22)
Some franchises struggle to get even one sequel. Fast and the Furious managed to get eight, with a ninth in 2020. (Suggestion: Fas10 Your Seatbelt. Anyone? Anyone? ) And somehow, Paul Walker is set to make a cameo in this one. Yeah, wait for it.
Artemis Fowl (May 29)
The Kenneth Branagh-directed movie, based on the novel by Eoin Colfer, will star Josh Gad, Judi Dench, and more. It’s about 12-year-old Artemis Fowl, who comes from a family of criminal masterminds. This movie has been in the works since 2001, so it’s about time it comes to fruition.
Wonder Woman 1984 (June 5)
Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, and Kristen Wiig appear in the second of the Wonder Woman series. Patty Jenkins returns as director.
Candyman (June 12)
Watchmen ’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II stars in this Jordan Peele-produced sequel to 1992’s Candyman, the classic horror film about the murdered son of a slave who haunts the neighborhood where Chicago’s housing projects once stood. Though the plot of this sequel remains unknown, we’re expecting something as smart and salient as any of Peele’s other interrogations of race. W.
Soul (June 19)
Pixar’s second feature of the year stars Jamie Foxx as a jazz-loving middle school teacher who, in a freak pothole accident, is separated from his earthly body and transported to a training center for souls awaiting assignment to newborn babies. In that liminal space, he meets a soul in training voiced by Tina Fey, who has been trapped there for years. We’re sold on the movie based on the virtues of Fey’s spectral cowboy dance alone. W.
In The Heights (June 26)
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first Broadway success is coming to the big screen. He stars, along with Orange is the New Black ’s Dascha Polanco, Anthony Ramos, and more.
Top Gun: Maverick
Maverick is back baby. And after 30 years the guy is still a loose cannon. In a time of drones, why do we need a hotshot pilot like Maverick? It's a question that's sure to be answered in the long-awaited sequel to the beloved '80s movie. One thing we do know, Tom Cruise sure as hell flew that jet himself.
Ghostbusters 2020 (July 10)
Ghostbusters in 2016 brought us Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, and Kristen Wiig as the specter-busting crew. This time, we get Paul Rudd, Sigourney Weaver, Dan Aykroyd, and others keeping the beloved franchise alive.
Tenet (July 17)
Christopher Nolan’s highly-anticipated latest is as mind-boggling and cryptic as ever, starring John David Washington as some sort of international spy who can move forward and backward through time. We can’t suss out much more than that, but we look forward to theorizing when the movie drops. W.
Morbius (July 31)
After his disastrous run as Joker, Jared Leto will return as yet another comic book villain, in the upcoming Morbius movie. Michael Morbius is a biologist who accidentally transforms himself into a vampire, starting out in the Spider-Man universe as a villain before becoming something of an anti-hero.
The King's Man (September 18)
The stylish, fan-favorite franchise returns for a new installment--this time, it’s a prequel about how the spy agency came to exist in the early 1900s. Ralph Fiennes leads a stacked cast in the story of how ex-soldiers formed the secretive spy agency. W.
Witches (October 9)
Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci, and Chris Rock star in the film based on the popular Roald Dahl novel about a boy who gets transformed into a mouse by a conference of witches.
Death on the Nile (October 9)
Kenneth Branagh returns as Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot in Death on the Nile, his follow-up to Murder on the Orient Express. Branagh will direct again for an all-star whodunit featuring Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, and Annette Bening. W.
Dune (December 18)
Denis Villeneuve will bring his acclaimed directorial vision to a new adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sprawling sci-fi epic about interstellar power struggles for control of natural resources. Starring Timothee Chalamet as Paul Atreides, the film will also feature Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, and Zendaya. W.

Hilary Weaver is a freelance writer based in New York who writes about politics, queer issues, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, and every woman the Queen has ever made a dame.
