- Brief - In the 5th century, the Roman Empire was collapsing and barbarians threatened civilization. In Britain, a teenager named Patrick was living a comfortable life as the son of a government official. Despite being part of the Roman Catholic Church, his faith didn't mean anything to him until he was kidnapped by pirates at the age of 16 and enslaved at the edge of the known world - Ireland. For 6 years Patrick was forced to work as a shepherd and was driven to the brink of starvation. It was there that he turned to his Christian faith and through divine intervention managed to escape. He was reunited with his family in Britain only to have a prophetic dream calling him to take Christianity back to the land of his captivity. Against the wishes of his family and the Church, Patrick returned as a missionary bishop to Ireland and converted thousands to Christianity. He opposed slavers, Irish kings, and possibly druids but nothing compared to the hostility he faced from his fellow Christians. After a close friend exposed a dark secret of Patrick's, it is believed he was ordered to leave his mission and return to Britain. Patrick had to choose - obey God or obey man?

The official trailer for I Am Patrick Swayze, a documentary produced by the Paramount Network on the life and career of the beloved late actor, has arrived. The film airs August 18th at 9 p. m. ET.
I Am Patrick Swayze pays tribute to several of Swayze’s iconic roles, including Johnny Castle from  Dirty Dancing, Sam Wheat in  Ghost and the drag queen Vida Boheme in  To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. Several of Swayze’s friends and former co-stars — among them Demi Moore, Sam Elliott, Rob Lowe, Jennifer Grey and Kelly Lynch — appear in the documentary, along with his widow Lisa Niemi and brother Don Swayze.
“Patrick had something about him that was very rugged, ” says Moore in the trailer, “but that also had that beautiful, gentle, sensuous ability to move. ”
“He charmed everyone, ” says Lynch. “He’d find a way in, and make you just fall in love with him. ”
The film also tackles Swayze’s profound athletic abilities as a gymnast, ranch-hand, ballet dancer, and mixed martial artist, all of which made his untimely death to pancreatic cancer in 2009 all the more tragic.
“He’d be bubbly and fun, and then as soon as he’s by himself and alone, he would just crash, ” says Niemi, who first met Swayze when they were teenagers at his mother’s Texas dance studio.
I Am Patrick Swayze premieres at the San Antonio Film Festival on August 2nd before airing on the Paramount Network.

Wow. I have seldom seen so much awful right in the beginning of a movie. I've seen the Christianity good, pagan religion bad stick before, but rarely that unsubtle and with that much distain for the intelligence of the viewers. Yes, some worked gold has been found in Ireland, but really, a community of 30 or so people has enough gold to form that statue? And then people who habitually kill for religious reasons just stand and watch while four strangers waltz in and smash up their altar? To contrast with source-based events: the much-quoted incidence of a sacred oak being hacked down by another christian zealoth by the name of Bonifatius? What's usually not mentioned is that there were enough frankish soldiers around for him not to end up nailed to the tree. Not to mention the pretty stainless steel dagger or a single man smashing up a huge stone like that. If you want to do fairy-tale, be clear about it; throw in some cute monsters or sidhe. On the level of this movie: throw in some leprechauns. Seriously. I was hoping for some interesting infos on an important historical figure, not such an anvilicious, thoughtless, narrow-minded piece of propaganda. It shows no respect either for the viewers or for Saint Patrick - as vague as the sources are on his actual work in Ireland, I think it took some more thought, work and self-denial than marching in and smashing a styrofoam rock, backed up by convenient lightning special effects.

The ending of this is so silly. As pointed out, Augustine believed the end was near. So did the apostles. So do I.
