Fortunately for y’all, I’m a HUGE Gorillaz fan and was able to catch the special premiere for an exclusive MIX movie review. EAST LA FANS: Reject False Icons canceled Unfortunately, the night went up with a whole bunch of hicks. First, the projector at the Cinépolis Pico Rivera where I booked my tickets broke down. As a result, they canceled the event. Pico Rivera fans and a lot of fans living on the east side of LA, unfortunately, missed out and had to wait in a huge line for a refund at the front desk, including me. However, there was a second special Tuesday showing, although all the way in Torrance, for LA fans. Being the psycho fan that I am, I immediately booked a ticket for the showing at the AMC Del Amo in Torrance. Although it was a bit of a drive, the movie was definitely worth it! It gave amazing new insights and fantastic new visuals from a typical day in the life of the Gorillaz. Furthermore, it showed the entire live band in their most real, raw versions of themselves yet! It ran for roughly two hours. However, the visual and vibes were so overwhelming, I got lost in the visuals completely. 2 hours felt like 10 minutes! Review: Reject False Icons As everyone knows, RFI was director Denholm Hewlett’s cinema directing debut. The movie followed the touring adventures of Gorillaz co-founders Damon Albarn and Jaime Hewlett. In addition, it documents the touring life of all current Gorillaz live band members. Furthermore, it shows life on the road with various Gorillaz collaborators like De La Soul, Vince Staples & George Benson. The main thing about this whole experience is that it’s a raw, unfiltered look in the wild, crazy life of the whole Gorillaz gang. No hard edits, no filters, no censors. Just Pure unadulterated music madness. Unfortunately, this may why there were such mixed reviews after the first Monday screening. The movie didn’t offer much more than a camera following the band around. The movie does a great job of portraying all members as one big happy family, and they all are. Plus, it shows Damon as the ever wacky, creative frontman that has rocked Gorillaz for nearly 30 years. However, the documentary is mainly just clips of him and the band in the studio, on the road, and in the studio again. In addition, the original visual band members 2-D, Murdoc, Noodle, and Russel, fail to make even a new cameo in the film. Lastly, it fails to address any new updates on the supposed 10-year-hiatus Damon claims the band is on right now. Where are they now, and where will Gorillaz go from here? We can only hope for the best. Despite these facts, REJECT FALSE ICONS offers a refreshing and raw, unedited new look in the real world of one of the greatest bands in the last decades.
