Overall, while Meet Me In St. Louis is a typical example of what Hollywood was churning out in that era (although with a much bigger budget, and in Technicolor) that simply does not say much, and certainly does not make the film something worth recommending, in and of itself. Dull, listless, and hopelessly stilted, about the only real arguments one could have about such a film is whether or not the characters were so unenjoyable due to the way they were written, the lifeless acting (save for Garland, who, naturally, dominates the screen) or both. It's also a good example of reputation trumping reality, as well as being a very long film- an hour and 53 minutes- of its genre, especially due to its generally listless soundtrack. The film also makes the annoying error of, in the opening sequence, set in the mid-summer of 1903, stating that there are only seven months to go until the fair, even though, it is in spring of 1904. But, again, this is a minor flaw. One can live with those if all the rest that is wrong with this film worked. Alack, it does not. But, at least there is still Judy Garland- those eyes, that voice, that emotion.

It is not in the great works of cinema that one discovers what it means to witness a superstar, for, often, in those films, even an average talent can shine. No, it's in mediocre films like Meet Me In St. Louis where the greatest talents take a film over, and make it memorable. If so, then one can only attribute the glowing critical success of this filmic mediocrity to the supernova that was Judy Garland. Yes, her star may have died in this world, but on screen, it always is. Lucky Vincente Minelli. Luckier you.

My one major issue with the continuity of this movie is that "Meet Me In, Louis" was not published until 1904 when the Worlds Fair opened in St. Louis. In the first duet scene with Esther(Judy Garland) and Rose(Lucille Bremer) they sing "Meet Me In, Louis. If you paid attention to the first photo intro to the season you remember seeing "SUMMER 1903. OOOOOPS!

Musically, the songs could not have gone any better. Perhaps a director such as Vincent Minelli and a producer such as Arthur Reed knew they had a true screenplay gem on their hands. I don't know, but I wish I did.

Margaret O'Brien gives a sterling performance, who needs lessons acting like 5 when you look act 6. Even her duet with Esther(Garland) is professional. Great qualities for a child actress. (See her in Little Women or The Canterville Ghost) Lucille Bremer, Joan Carrol, Marjorie Main, Tom Drake they all bring a special fortitude to this movie. Rose Smith(Lucille Bremer) receiving a telephone call from her on and off again boyfriend Warren Sheffield doesn't tarnish her one bit. Although she can act and put up a brave face, we know she is hurt.

So its not a musical by name but a warm family movie with good music, sewn seamlessly by a great director.

This October watch Judy in the classic film as Esther Smith and her family anticipate the 1904 World’s Fair and navigate the joys and sorrows of life in turn-of-the-century St. Louis. The free movie series is being held every Friday and Saturday night in October to celebrate the 125th anniversary of St. Louis Union Station, which opened in 1894 and was the biggest and busiest train terminal in the United States.

WHERE:  Outside in the Purina Pet Care Plaza at Union Station, under the St. Louis Wheel.
DETAILS:  Cozy up next to the fire pits and enjoy a free showing of Meet Me in St. Louis on the big screen. The St. Louis Wheel will be open for ticketed rides. Guests also can purchase tickets for the Carousel and mini-golf. The Soda Fountain will be open for dinner or delicious ice cream treats and bulk candies.
ABOUT THE ST. LOUIS WHEEL
Towering 200 feet over this city’s historic Union Station, the St. Louis Wheel is the biggest attraction to thrill this Mississippi River city since the Gateway Arch. With 42 climate-controlled gondolas, the Wheel operates from 10 a. m. until 10. 365 days a year.
The giant observation wheel is part of the $187 million family entertainment complex under construction at 125-year-old St. The development’s St. Louis Aquarium will open in December 2019. In the Wheel Park surrounding the towering attraction, guests can enjoy rides on the new Carousel at St. The classic 36-foot-wide merry-go-round features 30 whimsical animals and two themed chariots. It is manufactured by Chance Rides of Wichita, KS. An 18-hole mini-golf course also is open near the Wheel as part of the new entertainment complex. The Purina Performance Plaza at the Wheel Park offers space for special events and concerts. At the Union Station lake next to the Wheel, a fire and light show set to music plays daily. The Soda Fountain at Union Station, a modern take on a retro-style diner, also has opened overlooking the Wheel. The restaurant features over-the-top Freak Shakes stuffed with candies, cookies, pastries and more. Burgers, hot dogs and other classic diner foods are on the menu and bulk candies and creative ice cream flavors by St. Louis’ Clementine’s Creamery add to the fun.
What’s next at Union Station? The St. Louis Aquarium is under construction under the historic trainshed. Opening in December 2019, the 120, 000-square-foot two-story aquarium will be home to more than 13, 000 animals including 60 sharks and rays. The aquarium will explore the oceans, rivers and lakes of the world and will be a highly interactive experience for visitors who should expect to leave with their hands wet. Louis Union Station Hotel, a Curio Collection by Hilton, is the centerpiece of the historic complex. The hotel has been named one of the world’s top railway themed hotels by Condé Nast.
