Do they stand the test of time? Do they make any sense? Just how believable are they? Are they actually any good the second (or third, or fourth) time around? Let's just see, shall we? Twenty-seven years ago, we first met Harry Burns (Billy Crystal) and Sally Albright (Meg Ryan). When Harry Met Sally changed romantic movies forever, made it okay to fake orgasms over lunch (I do it all the time), and blessed us with one of Hollywood's most memorable New Year's Eve parties. (It also gave us one of the late Carrie Fisher 's funniest characters, dating expert Marie. ) That all makes it the perfect thing to watch as the year draws to a close. Some might say it's the ne plus ultra of romantic comedies, and who am I to argue with that? But when I rewatched When Harry Met Sally, it quickly became clear that I was not actually Team Harry. Every time he'd say something about women and relationships, I'd find myself shaking my head so violently that my beanie fell off. But, since the movie is almost three decades old, and the narrative itself goes back another 13 years before that, I shouldn't have been surprised. This movie is way pre-"woke. " Despite Crystal's undeniable charm, it's still hard to forgive some of these comments. The worst ones reflect a terrible clichéd idea of gender and how to treat women that (hopefully) wouldn't fly now. Pretty much the only thing I agree with Harry about is that Sally is fantastic. God bless Sally. As Sally says to Harry, "You are a human affront to all women, and I am a woman. " Here are some of the so, so, so, so wrong things this retro Lothario says. 1. "Men and women can't be friends because the sex always gets in the way. " To introduce this remark, here's the very first shot of Harry: Columbia Pictures Eating his sweet girlfriend's face. Look, Meg Ryan can't even handle it. So, horny, post-college Harry doesn't think men and women can be friends, huh? "No man can be friends with a woman that he finds attractive, " he says. "He always wants to have sex with her. " Stop projecting, you sex-crazed li'l hornet! Luckily, Harry does change his mind on this one later on in the movie. 2. "You know what goes through your mind? How long do I have to lie here and hold her before I can get up and go home? Is 30 seconds enough? " Peekaboo! Columbia Pictures In some ways, I can't actually disagree with this one. It is simply Harry's true, honest account of what goes through his mind after he has sex with someone. Just his true, honestly expressed wish to GTFO after "doing it" (as Marie and Jess, played by Bruno Kirby, would say). Truly someone who considerately considers the feelings of others. As seen when he hustles his way into a plane seat next to Sally, who clearly does not want a bar of this. 3. "You know, the first time we met, I really didn't like you very much…You were just so uptight then. " I personally love it when guys tell me I'm uptight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I always agree with them!!!!!!!!!! JK, I hate it. Plus, it's just not borne out in the movie that Sally's uptight. The only thing she seems to be uptight about is strange men skulking around (clue: the man is always Harry), which seems kind of fair to me. If anyone's uptight, it's Jess, with his dumb wagon-wheel coffee table. 4. "You're high maintenance, but you think you're low maintenance. " Again with the totally incorrect observations. At least this time Harry uses an example: He thinks Sally's penchant for ordering her salad dressing on the side is OTT. But this is also not a fair characterization of our gal. Sure, she likes to order her dressing on the side, and she's picky about her apple pie order. But she just wants it the way she wants it! She didn't pretend otherwise! Dude, if that's the only thing she's hung up on, she's like the most relaxed person I know. Meanwhile, Harry talks at her for the 18 hours it takes them to drive from the University of Chicago. Is a girl really supposed to listen to every cockamamie thing you want to say? Dear lord. (I will say that Harry utters this in Hollywood's most perfect scene, the one where they're watching Casablanca together over the phone, rgiven. ) 5. "I think you should wear skirts more. You look really good in skirts. " You know what she should wear more? Whatever the shit she wants. 6. "We're talking dream dates compared to my horror. " This one's a little obscure, but hear me out. Sally is telling Harry about a bad date she had, during which her date pulled a hair out of her head and used it to floss his teeth. But Harry can't let her win this one. HE'S the one who had the bad date. What happened during this date, you might ask? Well, he made a joke (a not-at-all offensive one about how Ethiopia has no food, ha ha ha ha ha) and she didn't laugh. And then he thought about his ex-wife. And that's it. That's what he thinks is worse than someone Oral-B Glide Threading it with part of Sally's mane. Ba-bow, Harry. Wrong answer. No thanks for playing. 7. "Perfect for ttery-operated pith helmet, with fan. " When Harry and Sally are shopping for a housewarming present for Jess and Marie, he thinks a pith helmet would be just the thing. Sure. Now that I think about it, there might have been a gold-plated one in last year's GOOP gift guide. 8. "She looked weird, didn't she? She looked really weird…her legs looked heavy. " Well, I feel a little bad about this one. Shortly after the pith helmet nonsense, Harry spies his ex-wife, Helen. She's with her new guy, Ira. Even though it's been a while since they broke up, you can tell the meeting has shaken Harry. Super understandable. You'd feel sorry for him about all this awkwardness, but then he starts saying how "weird" Helen looks. We've all been there—fooling ourselves into thinking an ex looks gross. But, sadly for Harry, it's just not true. Look at her! She's a babe. Truly a goddess. Look at that mane of hair. Ira's the one he should be mad at, tbh. Who only buttons one button on his polo shirt? 9. "Sally, it was a mistake. " The shower screen is a metaphor for how wrong he is. After they finally sleep together, in a satisfying culmination of ~9 years of sexual tension and friendly feelings, Harry runs away in the morning, leaving Sally confused and upset. (Who's uptight now????? ) While he's in the shower, he ponders what to say to her. This is what he comes up with. Good one, genius. It begins at a steady pace allowing us to bond with Harry and Sally before asking us to sympathise with them. This deliberate controlled direction by Rob Reiner gives the film some weight as well as humour, not simply rushing the character development to get the gags. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are superb as the 'couple' delivering pitch perfect performances that don't overshadow the quality of the material and investing real warmth and likability into the characters.
