La Gomera is an island located in the Canary Islands off the very south coast of Spain. Unlike some of the other islands, La Gomera is relatively small and mostly unspoiled when it comes to mass tourism you won't find British pubs and high rise hotels here. Instead, think awe-inspiring cliffs, mountains and stunning scenery. Different to other bordering islands, La Gomera has never had any volcanic eruptions, resulting in a lush forest known as "Laurisilva".
La Gomera enjoys a wonderful subtropical climate with mild winters and long, hot summers that can last for a period up to ten months. The resort experiences beautiful weather all year around, with the most ideal time to vacation being late autumn and spring. Conditions are perfect year-round for walking holidays and many keen hikers take advantage of this. Travelling about the island is simple and pleasurable as the roads are very well maintained.
La Gomera can, at times, experience a vast variance in climate categories. Precipitation averages from 200mm annually in the dried out areas of the south to 900mm per year in the highland regions. Both air temperatures and water temperatures will commonly be slightly warmer in the north than the south of La Gomera and obviously in winter the higher mountains in the centre are much cooler than the coast. However, in general the island is a perfect holiday destination wherever and whenever you choose to go.
Summer Weather In La Gomera
Temperature
Summer in La Gomera is typically the hottest time of the year and a popular time for sun worshippers and heat seekers, especially in the south of the island. Average temperatures sit around 21°C in June, rising to 23°C in July and a balmy 24°C in August and September. High temperatures can reach peaks of up to 27°C throughout the summer, which can feel very hot and humid at times, so visitors should take extra care in the heat.
Sunshine Hours/Rain
Summer is also the driest and the most sun-drenched time of the year in La Gomera, with 12 hours of sunshine per day and the lowest rainfall of the year in July, at just 90mm of precipitation across the month.
Sea Temperature
With average sea temperatures between 23°C and 24°C across summer this is the perfect time of year to explore the local beaches and take a relaxing swim. If you would like to know more about how these weather averages are calculated, visit this page.
Autumn Weather In La Gomera
Autumn is arguably one of the best times to plan a visit to the island of La Gomera. Temperatures are very pleasant, but have cooled slightly from the sizzling summer months, making it much more comfortable. October and November see temperatures of 23°C and 21°C respectively, with mild lows that never drop below 18°C and peaks which can still reach 26°C!
With a sea temperature which is still viable for swimming at 23°C it is not a surprise that many holidaymakers choose to visit at this lovely time of year La Gomera provides a perfect escape from drizzly, grey destinations in northern Europe.
Rain/ Sunshine Hours
The autumn months do see their fair share of rainfall; in particular November is the wettest month of the year in La Gomera with 165mm of rain, while October falls just behind with 145mm. However, there is enough sunshine to make up for this, as autumn still sees around 9-10 hours of sunshine every day.
Winter Weather In La Gomera
Tourists often flock to the Canary Islands looking for some winter sun, and this is very true for La Gomera too. The island has little variation in its hours of daylight; even in the shortest days of December, the area is still light and warm until much later.
With high temperatures of 21°C in January and February and an average of 9 hours of sunshine every day, it makes a great escape from colder and dreary climates.
There are however vast temperature differences ranging from the north and the south, due to the altitude of the Garajonay Peak and the southern coastline. In the north, the weather can be extreme, showing much colder temperatures than in southern areas. If you're looking for mild temperatures, it would be best to visit the south of the island in winter where lows often do not drop below 14°C and you are more likely to experience temperatures averaging 18°C although you will need a jacket, a coat is not necessary in La Gomera!
Spring Weather In La Gomera
Beginning in the month of March, spring is an ideal time to vacation in La Gomera, when temperatures are much more bearable than the heat that is experienced during the peak summer season. Temperatures rarely drop below 16°C, with average temperatures of 19°C in April and 20°C in May and peaks around a lovely 22°C and 23°C.
This makes it the most popular time of year for walkers and hikers that frequent the rugged island, although you might not be swimming just yet as the water is at its annual lowest temperature of 20°C.
Sunshine Hours
Spring also sees an increase in sunshine from winter, with an average of 10-11 hours each day throughout the season. Along with an average of 12-16 wet days a month, this brings a colourful explosion of subtropical flowers which blossom on the hillsides of La Gomera, making the island particularly beautiful at this time of the year.
Rain
You might need an umbrella in April when rainfall peaks at 159mm but don't let this put you off a mild and sunny spring-time trip. In general, the island is a perfect holiday destination for tourists all-year round. However, it is worth checking a local forecast nearer to your time of travel to La Gomera.

The island government ( cabildo insular) is located in the capital, San Sebastián.
Geography [ edit]
The island is of volcanic origin and roughly circular; it is about 22 kilometres (14 miles) in diameter. The island is very mountainous and steeply sloping and rises to 1, 487 metres (4, 879 ft) at the island's highest peak, Alto de Garajonay. Its shape is rather like an orange that has been cut in half and then split into segments, which has left deep ravines or barrancos between them.
Ecology [ edit]
The uppermost slopes of these barrancos, in turn, are covered by the laurisilva - or laurel rain forest, where up to 50 inches of precipitation fall each year.
The upper reaches of this densely wooded region are almost permanently shrouded in clouds and mist, and as a result are covered in lush and diverse vegetation: they form the protected environment of Spain's Garajonay National Park, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. The slopes are criss-crossed by paths that present varying levels of difficulty to visitors, and stunning views to seasoned hikers.
The central mountains catch the moisture from the trade wind clouds and yield a dense jungle climate in the cooler air, which contrasts with the warmer, sun-baked cliffs near sea level.
Between these extremes one finds a fascinating gamut of microclimates; for centuries, the inhabitants of La Gomera have farmed the lower levels by channelling runoff water to irrigate their vineyards, orchards and banana groves.
Natural symbols [ edit]
The official natural symbols associated with La Gomera are Columba junoniae (Paloma rabiche) and Persea indica (Viñátigo). [6]
Culture [ edit]
The local wine is distinctive and often accompanied with a tapa (snack) of local cheese, roasted pork, or goat meat. Other culinary specialities include almogrote, a cheese spread, miel de palma, a syrup extracted from palm trees, and "escaldón", a porridge made with gofio flour.
The inhabitants of La Gomera have an ancient way of communicating across deep ravines by means of a whistled speech called Silbo Gomero, which can be heard 2 miles away. [7] This whistled language is indigenous to the island, and its existence has been documented since Roman times. Invented by the original inhabitants of the island, the Guanches, Silbo Gomero was adopted by the Spanish settlers in the 16th century and survived after the Guanches were entirely assimilated. [7] When this means of communication was threatened with extinction at the dawn of the 21st century, the local government required all children to learn it in school. Marcial Morera, a linguist at the University of La Laguna has said that the study of silbo may help understand how languages are formed. [7]
In the mountains of La Gomera, its original inhabitants worshipped their god, whom they called Orahan; the summit and centre of the island served as their grand sanctuary. Indeed, many of the natives took refuge in this sacred territory in 1489, as they faced imminent defeat at the hands of the Spaniards, and it was here that the conquest of La Gomera was drawn to a close. Modern-day archaeologists have found several ceremonial stone constructions here that appear to represent sacrificial altar stones, slate hollows, or cavities. It was here that the Guanches built pyres upon which to make offerings of goats and sheep to their god. This same god, Orahan, was known on La Palma as Abora and on Tenerife and Gran Canaria as Arocan. The Guanches also interred their dead in caves. Today, saints, who are worshipped through village festivals, are principally connected with Christianity. But in some aspects, the Guanches’ god-like idealising of Gomeran uniqueness plays a role as well besides their pre-Christian and pre-colonial implication and shows strong local differences. [8]
Christopher Columbus made La Gomera his last port of call before crossing the Atlantic in 1492 with his three ships. He stopped here to replenish his crew's food and water supplies, intending to stay only four days. Beatriz de Bobadilla y Ossorio, the Countess of La Gomera and widow of Hernán Peraza the Younger, offered him vital support in preparations of the fleet, and he ended up staying one month. When he finally set sail on 6 September 1492, she gave him cuttings of sugarcane, which became the first to reach the New World. After his first voyage of Discovery, Columbus again provisioned his ships at the port of San Sebastián de La Gomera in 1493 on his second voyage to the New World, commanding a fleet of 17 vessels. He visited La Gomera for the last time in 1498 on his third voyage to the Americas. The house in San Sebastián in which he is reputed to have stayed is now a tourist attraction.
Genetics [ edit]
An autosomal study in 2011 found an average Northwest African influence of about 17% in Canary Islanders with a wide interindividual variation ranging from 0% to 96%. According to the authors, the substantial Northwest African ancestry found for Canary Islanders supports that, despite the aggressive conquest by the Spanish in the 15th century and the subsequent immigration, genetic footprints of the first settlers of the Canary Islands persist in the current inhabitants. Parallelling mtDNA findings (50. 1% of U6 and 10. 83% of L haplogroups), [9] the largest average Northwest African contribution (42. 50%) was found for the samples from La Gomera. [10] According to Flores et al. (2003), genetic drift could be responsible for the contrasting difference in Northwest African ancestry detected with maternal (51% of Northwest African lineages) and paternal markers (0. 3–10% of Northwest African lineages) in La Gomera. Alternatively, it could reflect the dramatic way the island was conquered, producing the strongest sexual asymmetry in the archipelago. [11]
Festivals [ edit]
The festival of the Virgin of Guadalupe, patron saint of the island, is the Monday following the first Saturday of October.
Every five years (most recently in 2013) is celebrated the Bajada de la Virgen de Guadalupe (the Bringing the Virgin) from her hermitage in Puntallana to the capital. She is brought by boat to the beach of San Sebastián de La Gomera, where several people host her, and transported throughout the island for two months.

It all started...
Ferry Gomera launched its ferry service in the island of La Gomera on 8 July 1974. The first vessel was christened Benchijigua in honour of a small village in the south of the island. The choice of its name also followed a tradition long-established by Fred. Olsen, by which all ships in the fleet should bear a name beginning with the letter B.
100 thousand passengers, a whole milestone
It is precisely this regular ferry route that has enabled La Gomera to become the island so popular today. Long-gone are the days when this destination remained sadly cut off from the rest of the world. In the early days, the Benchijigua offered three daily crossings in each direction, each one lasting 80 minutes and catered for 399 foot passengers and 60 cars. In just six months, more than 100, 000 passengers travelled on board, many of them making use of an added bonus, the free coach service connecting the port of Los Cristianos with the capital city of Tenerife, Santa Cruz.
Constant service
Without a doubt, these events marked the history of La Gomera and the first ferry Benchijigua accomplished its mission, soon becoming an essential part of day-to-day life for the people of the island. For example, it can even be said that this service saved more than one life; on various occasions the ferry set sail with just one ambulance and a patient on board, the journey often making the difference between life and death. The showcases of the Fred. Olsen company are replete with plaques and medals, awarded by the people of La Gomera as a token of their gratitude, not only for the excellent service offered, but also in recognition of the wealth of humanitarian acts carried out over the years.
More travelers, faster
Five years after the founding of this route, the Ferry Benchijigua was replaced by a larger, faster ship, the ferry Bonanza, already part of the Fred. Olsen fleet, but withdrawn from European traffic. The local people, unconditional fans and even friends of the company, received this second Benchijigua with open arms.
A gold in tourism
From an early date, Ferry Gomera also played an important part in promoting tourism to the island. The day trips offered from the island of Tenerife gave rise to a realm of secondary activities, ranging from the production of handicrafts and souvenirs, to the increase in restaurants, gift shops and car hire offices, and even taxi services.
From this point onwards, important European tour operators began to take an interest in this new destination. In 1984 the company celebrated its tenth anniversary. On this unforgettable occasion, in front of a large crowd gathered in the local harbour, Fred. Olsen received the honour of seeing both the avenues leading to the ports of San Sebastián and Los Cristianos rechristened with his name. Later, in 1988, the Regional Council for Tourism awarded the company a gold medal, the most important recognition in the tourist industry, "for its outstanding role in promoting tourism in the island of La Gomera and for creating this essential link with the island of Tenerife".
1989...
In September 1989, Ferry Gomera set up a new service between Los Cristianos y San Sebastián, this time introducing a vessel widely recognised as "fast and comfortable", the SES Sant' Agata, later known as the Gomera Express. In December of that year, on completion of the fleet, this vessel was returned to its original owners. The crossing with this ferry lasted just 35 minutes.
29 rounds around the world
One year later, on celebrating its 16th anniversary, Ferry Gomera had reached a grand total of 29, 095 crossings, clocking up no less than 625, 542 miles, some 1, 163, 800 kilometres or the equivalent of 29 trips around the world on the equator. Up to that point, the company had transported more than 504, 000 cars, 130, 000 trucks, 44, 300 vans, 43, 869 buses, totalling an overall weight of more than 1, 085, 000 tons. As well as the 890 patients who had been transferred urgently to the island of Tenerife on the regular ferry service, twenty additional emergency crossings had been made to transport patients in a critical condition. All this had consumed a massive 565, 750 tons of fuel.
A record trip!
In August 1991, after 17 years of existence, Ferry Gomera beat its own transportation records, by adding to its totals just over 85, 000 foot passengers and 10, 000 cars, as well as some 35, 000 foot passengers and 4, 500 cars on the route between Playa Blanca and Corralejo, re-established two years before by means of the Ferry Betancuria. This meant an increase of almost 10, 000 passengers over the figures reached the previous year. In 1994, during the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the launching of the connection between La Gomera and Los Cristianos, Fred. Olsen and the Canarian Postal Service signed an agreement to set up the first mobile post office on board the Ferry Benchijigua, as a symbol of the decades of collaboration between the two companies.
A close and special relationship!
On 23 June 1994, as part of its goal to remain at the head of the market in sea links to La Gomera and in order to improve its service, at the same time keeping fares as low as possible, the company added a fourth return journey at midday. This voyage opened up many opportunities to its users to combine their trip with connections to other islands and meant an increase in the company's offer of passenger and freight transport of 33%.
On 27 January 2000, in line with the company's policy towards modernisation, the Benchijigua Express sailed into the port of La Gomera. This impressive fast, wave-piercing catamaran was specially built in Australia and took 21 days to make the 23, 000 kilometers crossing which separates that huge country from the tiny round island. With this vessel, as a gift to the people of La Gomera for their loyalty over 25 years, fulfilled his promise to bring to the island a vessel considered as "one of the most modern in the world in its class".
The best of the best
At the present day, 's commitment with the island of La Gomera remains intact. Following the 30th anniversary of the company in the island, a new Benchijigua Express was introduced, this time a trimaran, the most modern type of vessel in the world. This spectacular ship boasts an overall length of 126 metres and carries more than 1, 200 foot passengers and 340 cars. The use of this Fast Ferry represents yet another step forward in the services previously offered by the other Benchijigua Ferries, and provides La Gomera with an unbeatable vessel.
Fred Olsen Express operates La Gomera inland route again!
The company invests once again in the Columbian island, connecting Valle Gran Rey, Playa de Santiago, and San Sebastián de La Gomera three times a day, and it has achieved that by building the Benchi Express in Barcelona, a comfortable passenger catamaran, and by creating a new business model, designed exclusively to make the quality and success of this route sustainable long-term, and without subsidies.
This 250-passenger ship, which can also transport bicycles and low-powered motorcycles, made its first trip during the summer of 2017, so that La Gomera’s residents and visitors have the opportunity to connect the busiest spots on board a Fred Olsen Express ship.
