Well, I told you read about Distomo. There the Greek partisans fought with the German elite SS - 40 Germans dead, 1 partisan killed. As retribution the Germans killed 218 Greek civilians in a village nearby - Distomo. The priest was beheaded, babies were stubbed with bayonettes, the breasts of women wre cut out. It all stays in the recordings of the then German military police - so it is not a Jewish life. Greece is a small country, The Greeks beat the Italians - much larger country.

A very sad movie about a very sad war one that can either be a butcher movie or so terribly grotesque that just the pull away from the full brutal nature it is still or would still be very difficult to view in any way shape or form. Any Western nation viewing the way that the Russians acted in Germany without knowing what was done to them by Germans though both things were brutal and evil to the extreme it is as war is in it's most pugnacious form. Is that good or bad, depends on who the winner was and how they present those facts.

5/18/18. Probably one of the most graphic anit-war film you will ever watch. Though brutal all the way through, and if you can stomach the atrocities, this film will make you rethink the reason why we must pray for peace all the time so men won't have the opportunity to act out the cruelty shown in this movie. As seen through the eyes of a 13 year-old, it is unbearable to watch what he had to go through and they commit unmentionable acts of genocide. The end sequence in which he tries to turn back the hands of history is as surreal as the atrocities he had to witness and incredibly live through. According to Roger Ebert, the experiences of the co-writer of the script, Ales Adamovich was used to inform the film. Worth watching, but it will be rough if you have a heart. And, you will never look at a cow the same way after seeing this movie.

And even then germany held stalingrad until feb, which is winter season for russia. Also i would like to point out your fact about hitlers troops being worse, Iv heard from a polish woman who actually was alive during the war and in quote form her when the germans came, order still stood, there boots were polished, they had manners, and came from civilized well established familes, when the russians came people were being raped, robbed, and murdered for no reason nevermind being jewish.

Emilio, thanks for this review. I saw the film when it first came out - and I had to leave the cinema for a while. As you say it felt like it wasn't a film but you were in the presence of the horror. I made myself go back in because I knew I was watching a masterpiece. I learned from someone who knew the cinema manager that they had regular walkouts at the same point in the film. Strangely hardly any of my friends have seen this film so I am glad you are endeavouring to keep its profile as high it should be.

"Come and See" is simply in a class by itself in the way it brutally depicts the horrors of war. It is thoroughly uncompromising, and determinedly unique. A harrowing, hallucinatory trip through Hell via WWII.

Though it will challenge the squeamish, it is a magnificent film about a grim subject.

Absolutely one of the most amazing films I've ever seen (twice now. Transporting and transcendent. As far from Hollywood's childish glorification of war as you can get. I've really never seen anything quite like it.



@Ward S: Thats right: If the Russian government does fight partisans in the selfsame manner as the Germans, it has either to convict itself of war crimes or stop whining about the Germans. Else it is hypocrisy and this deserves as always the double punishment. And yes: Showing drunk German soldiers on duty is like showing lazy Chinese or French eating awful food: A thing not possible in real life. So when making propaganda try to catch the national character of your opponent.

I saw this film in my twenties and I thought that is was a masterpiece then and now in my fifties I am convinced that this film is one of the greatest films ever made about the horror of war. If you can find it please see it. It will change you forever.
