There’s always a bigger fish With the recent reveal that the Emperor, long thought of as dead, will be returning in The Rise of Skywalker, many are speculating as to what role he may play in the resolution of this 9-part epic. In hindsight, it should’ve been incredibly obvious that he would return—I feel kind of like a moron for not seeing it sooner. His manipulation of Padme’s fears for her people in TPM lead to him gaining the political power necessary to destroy the Republic create the Empire. His manipulation of Anakin’s fears of loss in ROTS lead to him gaining the Force power necessary to destroy the Jedi and create the Empire. If, as I believe, Anakin and Padme are back then Palpatine would have to be back—in some role—too. They [Anakin and Padme] came back to make things right. Part of that is rectifying their past mistakes. Their big failure—of giving into fear instead of love—was their greatest teacher. Setting aside Padrey for a moment, the most straightforward role for Palpatine is to be a “big bad” to be taken down by Kylo and Rey in some climactic battle achieving a victory for all-time—the same that is dominating a lot of discussion in a variety of online Star Wars communities. The logic behind this is to completely eliminate his evil in once and for all and bringing about a lasting peace. Makes sense. Right? Well... What doesn’t sit right with me is we’ve seen, thrice now, people try to kill Palpatine. Mace Windu and several other masters tried, and they all ended up dead. Yoda tried, and failed to best him. Vader threw him off into a pit, yet he came back once more. Violence isn’t the answer in facing the evil he possesses. It didn’t work before. It won’t work now. So what does? We cannot simply accept that this horrendous evil can continue live and terrorize society. His return should not be nihilistically ignored. This is their fight after all. Confounding this is a personal dilemma I've had with this thinking. The idea of an absolute evil embodied in one person has never sat right with me—in real-life or Star Wars. Evil is not held within a select few and eliminating these few will destroy the darkness. The point of Anakin or Ben’s fall is to remind us that we all have the capacity for violence and destruction, just as Anakin’s rise reminds us that no one’s ever really gone. The capacity for redemptive love is as strong as that of darkness—it just matters what we open our hearts to for transformation. Something lead Anakin and Ben to darkness. Maul was molded for darkness from a young age, a tragedy in of itself. Dooku turned to evil after the death of his beloved student—again a tragedy. Did Palpatine have a similar tragic event shape him into a monster, or was he simply totally evil since birth? This gets at a larger question—Is there such a thing as absolute evil? Can someone be truly and undeniably, in all of their being, totally evil? A question that befuddles many philosophers and thinkers is now a driving moral question of Star Wars as the conclusion approaches. Is Sheev totally evil? Is he literally “The Dark Side”? Or, as Qui-Gon said back in TPM, is there a bigger fish to even Palpatine? Yesterday on the subreddit, someone raised a good argument—that Palpatine would turn to the light. This point has been bouncing around my head since shortly after the TROS teaser, when a friend planted the idea in my head. In this thread, someone cited a quote from an aborted Star Wars project. In this quote, the following section sparked my curiosity: They made the Emperor a sympathetic figure who was wronged by this fucking heartless woman. She’s this hardcore gangster, and she just totally destroyed him as a person. I almost cried while reading this At one point, it appears, Lucasfilm planned on introducing the “bigger fish” to Palpatine who victimized him. Someone was, relative to Darth Sidious, more heartless. The idea of a tragedy shaping Sheev into Sidious is not new. Could this provide credence to “Sheevdemption”? Just as Anakin returned and many of us predict Ben will, could Sheev not return? This is complicated by a key differentiating point between Anakin/Ben and Palpatine—love. Even in the peak of Vader’s thrall over the galaxy, he never gave up his love for Padme and went to extreme lengths to try and bring her back. A possessive and deeply flawed love, yes, but still love. Ben, as we see in TLJ, does love his parents and shows a great deal of compassion towards Rey. He, like Anakin, is confused and flawed in these dynamics—but he still possess the capacity to love. Palpatine, so far, has shown no concern for anyone but himself and his greedy, selfish lust for power. This reflects in the key delineation between him and Vader: Palpatine seeks the power to cheat death so he can live forever, Vader seeks that power so he can save the people he loves. Selfishness versus selflessness, once more this theme appears. Palpatine, so far, has shown no capacity to love. Dedicating the time necessary to properly show a tragic backstory that showed how he became evil may serve to show that he, at one point, did possesses an ability to love and lost it due to some “heartless woman” (again, a romance) may become too lengthy to convey with all of the other components of TROS. And while, as a previous post series I did, I do not believe one's past actions can prevent them from being better in a person—there isn’t any level of character evidence as of now to support that Palpatine has learned or shows a desire to change his ways. There isn’t anything to show that he is anything but an absolute evil in Star Wars who needs to be purged. But once more, we’re faced with the facts of the past—trying to kill him hasn’t worked. So what can we do? To answer this question, we’re going to need to travel to 19th century France. Going here, we meet a man whose central values are law and order. He believes in an eye-for-an-eye and in reciprocity when responding to wrong. He believes people cannot change and are defined by their past actions. The ideas of compassion, of empathy, of forgiveness, of restoration are foreign and incomprehensible to him. Logic, not love, paints his the colors of his heart. I’m talking, of course about Javert from Les Misérables. Through analysis of his character’s pivotal moment, I believe the resolution of the conflict of Palpatine can be uncovered. I’m not saying Javert is a perfect analogy to Palpatine, far from it, but in Javert’s ending there is a key similarity which reveals the shared characteristic between the two men—their rejection of love. After all, as the musical says, "To love another person is to see the face of God! " For those unfamiliar, the important details from Les Mis for this post are as follows. Many important and really interesting areas are being brushed over: Jean Valjean, who has been in slavery for 19 years after stealing a loaf of bread (5 years for the bread, 14 for trying to run), is granted parole—which means he must wear a badge of shame. A prison guard, Javert, reminds him he will never be free. After stealing silver from a covenant and being caught, the Bishop tells the police he gave the silver to Valjean. After the police leave, the Bishop tells Valjean to lead an “honest life” and to show compassion towards others. Valjean has a soliloquy where he realizes the errors of his life and decides to shed his identity and start a new life with a new name. Years later, after he’s accumulated power and wealth, Valjean learns that a different man has been identified as him and is going to be cast into slavery. Valjean, remember who he is and who he swore to be to the Bishop, realizes he must go to the court and reveal the truth to Javert and a court. Also in his new life one of Valjean’s employees (who has a child born out of wedlock) resorts to prostitution to care for her child and succumbs to illness. Valjean vows to save the child and raise her “to the light”. Before he can escape, Javert finds him and they fight. In this fight, Javert’s retributive views are revealed. Likewise, Valjean’s anger towards Javert—and his willingness to commit violence if he must to save the child—are highlighted. This piece does a great job of differentiating the multitude of ways “justice” can be defined. Valjean escapes, rescues the child, and raises the young girl into a woman. Many years later, Valjean is involved in a student’s revolution. This revolution captures Javert, who had been trying to infiltrate the revolution. Valjean is presented with the opportunity to kill him, but instead chooses to spare Javert with “no bargains or conditions”. Javert doesn’t understand why Valjean won’t seek revenge and cannot accept this act of compassion. After the revolution fails, Valjean saves the last survivor by carrying him through the sewers. This survivor is the beau of his adopted daughter. As they escape, Javert catches them and swears to bring Valjean to the court. Valjean agrees, but asks if he can first take the survivor to a doctor as “there is a life to save”. Javert, surprisingly, agrees and Valjean disappears with the man. Javert’s entire world view and psyche have been destroyed. He does not understand the compassion Valjean, a man he has tormented for years, showed towards him. He does not understand how a man could change. He does not accept the power of forgiveness. Facing this world, he kills himself—unable to go on after being faced with the reality that nothing can stop love. It’s this last point where I think the way to resolve Palpatine is found. Everyone in the saga has responded to him with violence and hate, matching his violence and hate. The Dark Side feeds on hatred. It makes it more powerful. Or, as the very first released film tells us: Fear will keep the local systems in line. Fear of this battle station. Fear is how Palpatine gets his power. Fear leads to anger, which leads to hate and then suffering. Anger, and violence, come from fear—Mace Windu was afraid the courts would rule in Palpatine’s favor, Yoda was afraid of what the Empire would become, Vader was afraid of his son dying. Everyone responded to Palpatine with fear, which will never work. Instead, look towards Valjean. He responded to his “enemy” by realizing he was not his enemy—but a man just like him. There was no hatred for Javert, only forgiveness. No resentment, only understanding. No heartlessness, only compassion. As Franklin Roosevelt once said: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself". If one learns that fear is the greatest paper tiger of them all, they can conquer anything presented towards them in life. Moving beyond fear is the journey of all heroes. Only once Valjean did this could he find peace in life. Valjean only accomplishes this once he gives his soul (ego) to God, which the story establishes as nothing more than love. Transferring our ego away from fear and into love is how we find victory, a real victory. The Skywalker’s are still progressing on this journey but the endpoint is on sight. If TROS is going to be, as Lucasfilm describes it, the conclusion of the Skywalker saga, then this journey must be completed. The PT is about the Skywalker’s (Anakin and Padme) giving into fear, the OT is about the consequences of their fear. The ST, as Lor San Tekka says, is about making things right—replacing the fear with love. Thus, the answer of how to deal with Palpatine. Not with violence driven by fear, but with compassion and understanding. He’s a man who was molded by some tragedy, there was a bigger fish that turned him into a monster. The only way to defeat him is to understand this and take away his power over people, which is entirely driven by fear. Is this “Sheevdemption”? Perhaps, perhaps not. More so “Sheevunderstanding”. The realization that we are all driven and transformed by the “bigger fish” who take hold over our egos and mold us into the beings, both good and bad, we are. An understanding that no one person can be purely evil or purely good, that eliminating the greatest evil in the universe will do nothing to combat the motivating force—fear—behind darkness. If Rey and Kylo learn that the only thing they have to fear is fear itself, then Palpatine will become a shrivel of nothingness. Nothing else is needed to defeat him and bring peace. He is a man who has worked to blot out love from the galaxy for generations. He strived for everyone to replace love with fear, granting him more power. To see two people, in the face of all his evil and heinous acts, respond with love and compassion would ruin him. He will become like Javert, his worldview destroyed and no way to go on. The galaxy will finally have freedom. Not from one singular embodiment of evil, but from the bigger fish. The real bigger fish—fear.

This is what javert sees in his dreams.
Les Miserables (2019) is a well acted, loose, updated version of Victor Hugo's classic novel. Damien Bonnard plays a sympathetic police officer, assigned to a new team, policing an intercity town in France. He is met with difficulties from the people, as well as from his fellow officers, however he is able to hold it together. I would recommend this film to anyone that enjoys good cinema.
Director Tom Hooper calls this performance of Eddie as one of the highlights of the film. So proud of him.

It's somewhere between Do the Right Thing and Detroit. Despite being made in another country it's so sad how relatable it is to police brutality here in American. It's definitely a power message that I hope will bring the world together instead of tearing us apart.

I walked into the theater to see Les Miserables late this afternoon with no expectations.
Maybe a thought that this was a modern 'woke' version of Hugo's classic. It isn't. It's a gritty, fast paced, police procedural set in the banlieues of Paris. Unflinching about what the police find there, and how the police act and react to a Paris that tourists never see.
