For those who have not heard of Shade before, it is the spiritual successor to my Rootless Pixel Launcher, bringing the same clean design philosophy but with my twist on it. I released the initial version around a year ago, based on Android Pie. This new version is based on Android Q, and has the best of both Rootless Pixel Launcher 3 and Shade Pie. Since the beginning Lollipop has always been my minimum requirement, but backporting all features always drained a lot of my time for a very small amount of users. Nougat is now the minimum requirement, so I can focus on development for the vast majority of devices. Changes New The new design from Android Q's Launcher3 base, that can be seen on Android One devices. At A Glance and Unread will show on your homescreen at the same time, automatically switching to what is the most important. Suggestions are shown at the top of the app drawer, like Rootless Pixel Launcher. Use any widget underneath the dock, or not, if you prefer a clean look. Whatever you choose, the dock won't disappear. Hiding applications has been streamlined, by dragging an app to the Hide icon on top. Find them again by scrolling down veeeery far in the app drawer. Android Q gesture users can activate the Draw Over Apps permission and the Accessibility Service to get a feature similar to Fluid Navigation Gestures: simply tap the gesture bar to go home, with a smooth animation. Themes are reworked, to work with Android Q’s system theme. Choose between Light or Dark mode manually on older Android versions, or let it decide from the wallpaper. Then pick an accent to apply throughout the launcher, for a modern look that’s personalized in the iconic shades of Shade. Switch between Google Sans or your default font. See essential app information quickly in the custom app-info view. Fading transition has been polished, using inspiration from the Android Q app closing animation. Cleanup Some features from Pie haven't made a return in Q: App categories, because many people did not like them. They might return in some form in the future, but for now they are gone. The plugin system, except for the customizable News Feed. No other launcher developers seemed to be interested in the idea, so it didn’t catch on. QuickSwitch support, as I do not root my phones anymore, so I cannot reliably test and debug my own app. Last year I relied on logs from other users, but that was painful to work with. I would like to point out ahead of time I am very focused on fun. If people are having fun, damn the rules (to a point of course) and handwave some of the more trivial things away. Here's what's been going on, and I apologize for this gigantic wall of text in advance and understand 95% of people won't read the entire thing. I used to DM for my small group of 3 close friends. I absolutely hate it, I don't know why. I love creating, I love making worlds and scenarios and watching my friends play in them, but I hate running it myself. So, I reached out to an old DM of mine, but he was busy, which is a huge bummer because he's a really fun DM. We ended up not playing for a few months because I really don't like DMing. One of the members of my group says she's got a friend who used to DM and suggest we invite him. My roommate and I have had awful luck with people in the past so we invite this guy along and tell him this is a trial run to see if we get along with him and his play style. He's fine with that so I ask what system he'd like to run so we could maybe prepare early. He says, "Oh, I run 2. 5e. " and I immediately think this is going to be awful. I know some of you may like 2e and that's fine but I personally hate it and I know that the ". 5e" probably means homebrew. Anyway, he shows up, we didn't prepare because, you know, homebrew. It's also just a oneshot to try things out. He starts walking us through how to make characters and that's when the nightmare began. For those of you that don't know, skills in 2e took up skill slots, either 1 or 2. In his version, it turned into some weird point buy. You get [number of points we never exactly nailed down and new DM somehow couldn't explain to us] and you use them to buy your skills which had different costs. Like, just as an example, stealth was an initial 7 points to buy and 5 points every level after, survival was 5 points to buy and 3 points every level after. He claimed this was better. It was not. Not only did the point value seem highly arbitrary, he only had maybe 15-20 skills priced out but a list of ~50 skills total, so we had to just guess how much it cost. He also told us that the more we used our skills the better we would get with them which implied we needed to keep track of how many time we used a particular skill and any skill we didn't use would be nigh useless when needed. I brought up a few times how I liked the way skills are handled in Pathfinder and his response was, "I don't get it though, do you just download your skills? How are you learning them? " in reference to how you get skill points on level up and allocate them however you want. Because of how convoluted his weird 2e/homebrew hybrid was and his absolutely atrocious spelling and grammar it took us 6 hours to make level 5 characters. I was playing what I believe to be a homebrew race that was essentially an anthropomorphic coyote. Because I was essentially a dog, I got bonuses to using scent to track. I put points in the skill even. Not once did I succeed on checks to track a known scent. "Now, that's entirely possible, you could roll bad, " you say. True, however, because I had 3 points in the tracking skill I was told I had to roll 3 or lower. I was already confused and not happy with how things were going so I completely missed the fact that 2e goes off of percentages a lot and the difficulty was supposed to be something like 20% plus an additional 20% if the scent is known, plus 3% every time you try tracking the same scent. But our new DM also did not pick up on this, ergo I failed every single check. Now, we had told him it was cool to run a one shot, but he said that if things went well we might keep going with these characters. At this point I was invested. I spent 6 hours with this nonsense, I gave my wily coyote boy a whole head canon, I put points in engineering: siege engines just for fun and came up with a reason why a 5 foot tall coyote hunter living in the woods would know anything about trebuchets. I liked him and wanted to use him more. I'm sure you guys know how that is at times. Anyway, we were tasked with finding out why a whole bunch of chickens and milk and such had been disappearing from the village. We never found anything particularly evil, just some petty thefts committed by what we understood to be very small thieves. We managed to bumble our way out to the hideout and found a hill with double doors set in it. We announced ourselves and I decided to open the doors. This is when new DM gets this doodoo masticating grin on his face and does the ol', "Are you sure about that? ". I just say yes and open the doors. We were greeted by 10 goblin crossbowmen riding wolves, 10 goblin spearmen, 10 kobold archers, and two goblin shamans. Every single one was before us on the initiative track and I immediately got killed, everyone else soon followed. We had played for one hour. After this, we decided in no uncertain terms that we hated "2. 5e" and would not be playing it. However, this guy had run World of Darkness stuff before so I suggested we try Vampire: The Masquerade. Everyone agreed, we made characters the next weekend, and the new DM wasn't there so we focused on just enjoying the character creation process. Even though he sent us his own "player's guide" he typed up, it was still essentially the core book so it was totally fine. Creating characters for VtM was actually really fun and we were excited. Spoiler: I half love playing with the new DM and half very, very much hate it. The first session was interesting enough we decided to stick with him and we just completed session 4. The first time I thought something might be amiss is when it came time to decide on weaponry. VtM can be pretty combat light but we felt we still needed to be prepared. My character is a Ventrue and in life was a 20 year old, limp wristed, trust fund kid who hated poors. My plan was to eventually become a dealer of judgement, bringing down those who, like I previously had, made others suffer for their own gain. He attended a prestigious academy and wanted to be just like daddy or mommy, an investment banker or a corporate lawyer. He joined a marksman club in school to pass the extra time he had in his very leisurely paced life. Because of these things I bought myself a very expensive long range rifle, intending to carry it in a briefcase like assassins usually do in movies, a la Willem Dafoe in John Wick. Here's the problem. This decision sparked a 20 minute debate on the practicality of a long rifle. He says, "Okay, you can buy one, but what are you going to do with it? Just carry it around in public? People aren't going to like that one bit. " I tell him I'd carry it in a case and keep it in the car when not needed but most of the campaign will probably talk place in dark settings with few people around so why does it matter so much? He says, "So when combat starts, you're going to run back to the car? " I say no, a weapon like that is usually used when you know you'll have the opportunity to use it, or at least I'd like to think we can assume that from now on. I'd grab it and put it together when needed for a combat we know will be coming. He says, "So, in combat, you're going to set the case down, open the case, grab the receiver, put the stock on it, put the barrel on it, mount your scope, load the magazine, cock the weapon, and then fire? " I say yes because what else would I do? After arguing for 20 minutes I finally tell him, "I'm also getting pistols to carry with me at all times and I want the rifle so I'm getting the rifle too. " and he finally drops the argument. Now here's the interesting part. Later we argue about it again and he says to me, "So you're just going to carry a 4 foot long case with you? ". I realized at this point he forgot I specifically mentioned a rifle that can be broken down. Funny side note, he acts like he knows a lot about guns and added this rifle (and a ton of other weapons) to the weapons list in his player's guide, but my roommate (amateur competition shooter) had to tell us both that the rifle in question could not be broken down. So I picked a different rifle I was told could be broken down and could still serve my purposes and we went through the whole spiel again until he finally just went, "Well okay, just remember you have to put it all together". Now, I took ambidextrous and concentration as merits so I could use two pistols without much of a penalty. My thought process behind this was, human using two pistols in a combat situation, very bad. A vampire with enhanced reflexes with two pistols, very good and fun! We had already established this during session one. Session four, I have to buy weapons again because I lost my pistols. This sparks a debate on the practicality of using two pistols in combat. I would like to point out that I chose Glock 17Ls which can hold 17 rounds in the magazine and 1 in the chamber for a total of 36 rounds. His issue was reloading. He says, "Why are you using two pistols? " I tell him because being a supernatural creature lets me do stuff like this that would normally be bad. He says, "But, how are you going to reload? Are you just going to-", miming wobbling the guns around to imply they magically reload. I tell him I'll just holster one, reload, holster the other, reload, get back to it. He says, "So in the middle of combat, you're going to holster one weapon, drop the mag out of the one you're holding, slam a new mag in, holster the now reloaded gun, grab the other one, drop the mag out of that one, reload it, then start shooting with them both, all while you're being shot at? " I say yes and remind him that I have three other teammates similarly armed that can absolutely cover me while I reload. My roommate adds that 36 rounds is a lot of lead to go downrange so hopefully I wouldn't even need that many. New DM continues to argue that it just takes so long so why am I doing it (little fun fact, reloading a pistol magazine takes very little time, even for inexperienced shooters). I tell him because it's a magical vampire pretend game and using two guns seems fun. He finally relents and goes, "Okay, I hope you're okay with spending an entire round reloading your guns. " My brain stops working for just a second trying to process that we just argued for like 20 minutes about this and I reply, "Wait, one round? You mean like, I dunno, heavy crossbows in DnD or Pathfinder? Why would that be an issue? " He just says, "As long as you're okay with it. " and we finally move on. Oh, but I'm not done yet. Here's the in-game story thus far. We are vampires of the Sabbat. We've been conscripted to hunt down some mysterious man with the ability to manipulate light and fly. We investigate the scene, find nothing, but run into a strange lady that knows us all. She later contacts me in secret and gives me a number to call. I call it later, she claims to be my father's assistant, drops some clues that she knows I'm vamped along with my new pals. We get told that, for some reason that's still unclear, we need to travel through some mirror dimension to get to my father's mansion. In the process of doing this I get shot in the leg after losing my mind to a shade and trying to run off. We get into the mansion, I scream bloody murder because my leg is shatter, guards show up. We later have to escape the guards and hunters that show up to assist the guards. I'm taken somewhere else by mystery lady in the chaos. The rest of my team find me and we go confront my father at his office, things go bad again, we need rescuing. Now, the DM likes to do the old, "Uh uh, you didn't tell me you [did thing]! " and it's very annoying basic stuff. One of the most annoying times this happened is my roommates character picks up three flash bangs then goes to pick up an SMG he was stealing from an unconscious guard. The DM goes, "Wait so, how are you going this? Are you cradling all the flash bangs against you with one are and trying to pick up the gun? " My roommate says, "What? No, I put them in my pockets. " DM goes, "Uh uh, you didn't say that! And flash bangs are very small, how are they going to fit? " My roommate says, "I put one in each outside pocket of my coat and one in an inside pocket. " to which the DM expresses confusion because apparently he didn't know pockets inside of coats are a thing. My roommate has to assure him it's a real thing. DM says, "Okay fine, but you didn't say you were doing that so how are you picking up the gun? " This right here is one of those things that should've gotten a handwave. Literally anybody else would just assume the flash bangs would go in his pockets before he tries picking up anything else. Anyway, later I'm told in secret my father had cancer and sold me to the vampires in the hopes I would get turned and he could use my blood to cure himself. I'm also told I have to kill him. So near the end of tonight's session the DM says my father is in hiding because he knows we'll come for him and I jokingly say, "He's in Florida at his vacation home. " DM likes this and decides that's where we have to go. I decide we're going to use a private plane (a Learjet, just fyi) owned by my father but we need a way to get there without him knowing. My idea, because as a normal person I am not privy to FAA rules/regulations/laws/what have you, is to bribe an air traffic controller or literally anyone with any modicum of power over flight paths and such to falsify the flight data so it looks like we've gone elsewhere. Cue another 20 minute debate on how any of this would work. I tell him I'll bribe the guy to put down that we're landing at a different airport than the one we'll actually land at. He says, "Well what about the other end, how are you going to land at an airport that's not expecting you? " I suggest we find a public airstrip that's in a remote area of Florida where employees might care less about random flights coming in and might be more susceptible to a bribe. He says, "So you're going to try to land a jet in a grass field? " I say no, it would be a dirt runway. He says, "Well you'd have to build it. " I say we'd land at a public airstrip we know is there. He says, "It would still have to be built. " I say there's thousands of public airstrips all over the place, why can't we just assume there'd be one somewhere in Florida? He comes back to his dirt runway thing. I tell him 727s have been landing on dirt runways in places like Africa and Colombia for a long ass time and he is just baffled that this is a thing. I also mention there are things called gravel kits for planes that help avoid issues with dirt and such. I'm just researching ways to please his pedantry at this point. He says, "Well I've landed a plane in rough conditions before and this isn't a good idea. " Side note, not only is he apparently a pilot but he also worked private security where he carried an "Ingram. 50 Desert Eagle" (no such thing, Ingram created two well-known modern guns, the Mac 10 and Mac 11, and the Desert Eagle is a terrible choice for a sidearm when literally anything else exists), and was a volunteer firefighter who routinely "benched people above my head". Anyway, I just say fine, how about we turn just turn off the transponder. DM says, "Well how are you going to explain an entire plane disappearing in mid-flight? ". I just start throwing out ideas because I'm getting wildly annoyed at this point so I suggest we hire a second plane to fly on the books and we fly off the books, make it look like only one plane of the same make/model took off from this runway. He says, "But you'd still have to log your flight path. " So I say, fine, that we'll log the flight path but at the last minute veer off and go somewhere else. "But who's going to let you land without clearance? " Finally I tell him, "Fine, okay, I give up, we're not doing it anymore. " He asks if I have any other ideas how to fly there and I just say, "Nope, I gave up, I'm done with it. " after about 20-30 minutes of arguing. Earlier in the campaign he gave my roommate the ability to access a supernatural computer with his mind so my roommate just asks if he can just change the call sign of the plane to another plane my dad doesn't own and the DM said, "Yes, that'll work! Okay, so you fly down there. " This took less than five minutes. I was so annoyed I just screwed around on my laptop from then on and the game just died and we talked about other stuff for an hour before everyone went home. My roommate and I talked about it later and he agreed this entire this is getting ridiculous. For me it's this insistence that we apply as many real world rules to the magical undead roleplaying game as possible. Tabletop games are supposed to reward you for being creative and I feel like I'm being punished. A big issue with the other 2 players is 75% of the focus has been on my character, 20% on my roommate, and the rest on them. While this particular part is about my character and his family, the DM has not made much effort to include situations where they can be useful. The one combat we actually fought in, my character was unconscious, my roommate's character had his gun taken away, my friend "Joe" got essentially disemboweled in one turn by a high level werewolf, my other friend "Alice" fired a gun once, and the DM's wife, playing a very high level vampire got mad she had to use one of her special vampire powers to kill everyone in the room in one turn. Even when we're not playing this guy argues about the dumbest stuff. I started telling a story by saying, "So my dad is Mexican, he's got dark brown skin... " and he immediately gets very confused. He says, "I don't understand, wasn't he born in America? " I say, "Well yes, but my grandpa was born in Mexico, so my dad is Mexican by blood. ", you know, talking about his race. Maybe there are better words to describe what kinda junk makes up someone's blood or DNA or whatever you want but I'm fairly certain a very large portion of people would understand what I meant. DM, still very confused says, "Well then he'd call himself Latino. " I reply that no, he'd call himself Mexican because that's where my grandpa, his father, was from. DM says, "Well I just don't understand you, you're not putting it into words I get. " I say, "Literally everyone would understand what I meant if I referred to someone as Mexican. " and, getting agitated, he says, "Well I don't care what other people think, that's not right because that's not a race, there are only three races. These are caucasoid, negroid, and mongoloid. " My roommate and I just go, "What". Those terms were widely used in the 19th century and have very widely fell out of use. We are now in the 21st century, but this is apparently the hill DM has chosen to die on. We argued about this for twenty minutes because I finally said, "Enough. My dad is Mexican, end of story, moving on. " Twenty minutes of arguing about me calling my dad Mexican when I'm trying to tell a story about my dad's friend running a low level air mattress scam. A completely stupid story sidelined by this. So for anyone who skimmed or even read all the way through (you are a hero and I love you just for the effort you put into reading this), am I wrong in deciding after DM left last night that he gets one more chance and then he's out? Am I focusing on fun way too much and trying to do things outside of the scope of "established" reality? What should I do in this instance? tl;dr new DM pushes realism way too much imo, argues about outdated (forgive me for saying this) boomer ideology, pretends to know everything and has proven multiple times he's full of bovine excrement, I'm no longer having fun but wondering if maybe I'm wrong. They also continually whine like pigs and drool all over the place, but never leave a trace anywhere they've been. I really wanted to play this but it never came to ps4.
