With his first solo effort, parting ways with Rossellini but not entirely from neo-realism, he went back to one of his passions- comic-book writing. Los Sciecco Bianco (The White Shiek) is likely one of Fellini's funniest works, and it shows him gearing up his visual sense of space, and with his trademark characters (set, which is his usual, in Rome. The story is quite simple and, for the novice to Fellini's daring feats of the 60's, entertaining and accessible. A man with a level of pride in his family's connections in bureaucracy and religion in Rome (played by Leopoldo Triste, with perfect usage of wide eyes) is married to a young woman, Wanda (Brunella Bovo. She loves him, but finds him perhaps a little un-easy to be around for a day. So, she sneaks off for what she thinks is just a momentary call for fandom- she's a big fan of 'the white sheik' the star of the kinds of comics being printed in Italy (mostly for women, as said on the DVD, they were still photos as opposed to drawings, with pulp/love stories. But, in a Fellinian twist, Wanda gets whisked away by the shooting crew of the series, and Ivan (Triste) is stuck in one of those text-book comic situations, where everything is "under control. The results are rather funny, if also intriguing. The little characters are also what makes the film fun, aside from our lead couple, and with this film we get the white sheik himself, Fernando Rivoli (Alberto Sordi, who finds that line between a stealthily romantic type and hopelessly dim) and the crew, filled with their little comments. Plus, there is a late-night visit to Ivan in a despairing state, from Cabiria (later to appear in one of Masina/Fellini's best combinations, Nights of Cabiria) involving a flame shooter. And as the film unravels, it becomes key to the fun- we know things will turn out right somehow, but how is what makes the film work (unlike Fellini, some might think, as many of his other films are the opposite, with flights of fantastical comedy in hopeless tragedies. It's not a great film, there are some inconsistencies, and at a couple of points the pace loses its strength. But if this was a place to evolve from for the director, it's not a bad place in the slightest. He had previously co-directed Variety Lights in 1950 with Alberto Lattuada. Originally the treatment for The White Sheik was written by Michelangelo Antonioni. [4] Carlo Ponti commissioned Fellini and Tullio Pinelli to develop the treatment. It was satirical in nature, targeting the trashy fotoromanzi comic strips that were extremely popular in Italy when the film was made. [5] The male lead, Leopoldo Trieste, a playwright who did not consider himself an actor, reluctantly auditioned for Fellini. During the audition Fellini asked him to compose a sonnet that the lead character would have written to his wife. The poem which begins "She is graceful, sweet and teeny... " was included in the film. [6] Appearing briefly as the prostitute Cabiria, Giulietta Masina would later return to this role in Nights of Cabiria. Her short scene inspired Fellini to write the screenplay and also convinced producers that Giulietta was ready for the leading role. Arrivati in mattinata dal paese e sistemati in albergo, Wanda, col pretesto di fare il bagno, si allontana di nascosto verso la casa di produzione del fotoromanzo. Lì viene ricevuta dalla soggettista, che le dà indicazioni su come seguire la compagnia per le imminenti riprese, effettuate sul litorale romano: senza pensarci troppo e rimuovendo completamente l'idea delle visite programmate dal marito, Wanda accetta e segue il gruppo. Sul posto incontra finalmente l'attore Fernando Rivoli, interprete dello "sceicco", che accetta di buon grado di conoscerla e le propone addirittura una piccola parte: in realtà l'uomo è abituato a trattare con le sue numerose ammiratrici, e sfrutta occasioni simili per avere delle brevi avventure con loro. In breve Fernando propone a Wanda una gita in barca e si allontana con lei dalla riva, ma la donna, pur infatuatissima, è troppo ligia ai suoi principi per concedersi. Anche il mito dello "sceicco" del resto crolla bruscamente quando Wanda scopre che Fernando è sposato, e al ritorno sul luogo delle riprese assiste a una scenata di gelosia fra lui e la moglie, giunta nel frattempo. È quasi il tramonto, e la compagnia abbandona il litorale lasciando sola Wanda. La sera, avendo trovato una delle lettere che lo "sceicco" aveva inviato a Wanda, Ivan capisce che la moglie si è allontanata per lui e teme una fuga definitiva, che lo screditerebbe senza rimedio di fronte allo zio e a tutto l'ambiente della provincia. Si reca al commissariato e dopo infinite esitazioni, terrorizzato da un possibile scandalo, accetta di fornire le generalità della scomparsa; poi, girovagando disperato a notte alta, incontra in una piazza romana due simpatiche prostitute, la romana Cabiria e la veneta Assunta, che lo consolano e con cui lui si intrattiene innocentemente. L'indomani in albergo per Ivan si ripresenta il problema di giustificare l'assenza della moglie di fronte ai parenti, anzi è reso più grave dal fatto che lo zio è riuscito a rinviare l'udienza papale, ma si aspetta finalmente di conoscere la nipote acquisita; in precedenza questa, in preda a sensi di colpa, aveva ingenuamente tentato il suicidio gettandosi nel Tevere, con il solo effetto di cadere su un punto più basso dell'argine, e, notata da un "fiumarolo", aveva passato la notte in ospedale. Ivan, grazie a una segnalazione della polizia, riesce in extremis a raggiungere l'ospedale e a ritrovare la moglie: le spiegazioni sono rimandate a dopo, in quanto la prima cosa da fare è raggiungere al più presto Piazza San Pietro per l'incontro con gli zii e l'udienza papale.
