This song draws you in, something in the way she sings. And I Miss You 💔. Marianne answers the door when Connell rings the bell. She's still wearing her school uniform, but she's taken off the sweater, so it's just the blouse and skirt, and she has no shoes on, only tights. Oh, hey, he says. Come on in. She turns and walks down the hall. He follows her, closing the door behind him. Down a few steps in the kitchen, his mother Lorraine is peeling off a pair of rubber gloves. Marianne hops onto the countertop and picks up an open jar of chocolate spread, in which she has left a teaspoon. Marianne was telling me you got your mock results today, Lorraine says. We got English back, he says. They come back separately. Do you want to head on? Lorraine folds the rubber gloves up neatly and replaces them below the sink. Then she starts unclipping her hair. To Connell this seems like something she could accomplish in the car. And I hear you did very well, she says. He was top of the class, says Marianne. Right, Connell says. Marianne did pretty good too. Can we go? Lorraine pauses in the untying of her apron. I didn't realize we were in a rush, she says. He puts his hands in his pockets and suppresses an irritable sigh, but suppresses it with an audible intake of breath, so that it still sounds like a sigh. I just have to pop up and take a load out of the dryer, says Lorraine. And then we'll be off. Okay? He says nothing, merely hanging his head while Lorraine leaves the room. Do you want some of this? Marianne says. She's holding out the jar of chocolate spread. He presses his hands down slightly further into his pockets, as if trying to store his entire body in his pockets all at once. No, thanks, he says. Did you get your French results today? Yesterday. He puts his back against the fridge and watches her lick the spoon. In school he and Marianne affect not to know each other. People know that Marianne lives in the white mansion with the driveway and that Connell's mother is a cleaner, but no one knows of the special relationship between these facts. I got an A1, he says. What did you get in German? An A1, she says. Are you bragging? You're going to get six hundred, are you? She shrugs. You probably will, she says. Well, you're smarter than me. Don't feel bad. I'm smarter than everyone. Marianne is grinning now. She exercises an open contempt for people in school. She has no friends and spends her lunchtimes alone reading novels. A lot of people really hate her. Her father died when she was thirteen and Connell has heard she has a mental illness now or something. It's true she is the smartest person in school. He dreads being left alone with her like this, but he also finds himself fantasizing about things he could say to impress her. You're not top of the class in English, he points out. She licks her teeth, unconcerned. Maybe you should give me grinds, Connell, she says. He feels his ears get hot. She's probably just being glib and not suggestive, but if she is being suggestive it's only to degrade him by association, since she is considered an object of disgust. She wears ugly thick-soled flat shoes and doesn't put makeup on her face. People have said she doesn't shave her legs or anything. Connell once heard that she spilled chocolate ice cream on herself in the school lunchroom, and she went to the girls' bathrooms and took her blouse off to wash it in the sink. That's a popular story about her, everyone has heard it. If she wanted, she could make a big show of saying hello to Connell in school. See you this afternoon, she could say, in front of everyone. Undoubtedly it would put him in an awkward position, which is the kind of thing she usually seems to enjoy. But she has never done it. What were you talking to Miss Neary about today? says Marianne.  Excerpted from Normal People by Sally Rooney. Copyright © 2019 by Sally Rooney. All rights reserved. The second best song of their 21st century career. Normal people pictures. Normal people summary. Nice cover of one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite musicians, SADE. 'Ordinary Love (2019) is exactly what it says on the tin: a portrait of mundane, turbulent, beautiful love. It charts the journey of a couple moving through tough times and is as thoughtful and nuanced as you'd hope. Its story is rather straightforward (it's pretty much exactly what you'd expect) but it delivers what it needs to and feels all the more 'real' because of it. The focus of the film is something that isn't actually explored all that often and it's great to see it portrayed so sensitively here. The picture's grounded, non- romanticised' romance is brilliant, too. It feels as close to 'real' as possible, an honest and moving exploration of love that never seems heightened or false. The two stars deliver the goods in their subtle, harder-than-you-may-expect roles, coming together as a compelling pair of, essentially, real people. They have flaws and they argue but they also have an undeniable connection. When this is exploited, it's really heart-warming. When it comes down to it, though, the flick just isn't all that exciting or, perhaps, impactful. It's engaging enough and never even close to boring, but it doesn't quite hit home as hard as it ought to. It's good, don't get me wrong. I can't quite put into words what it is that it is, for me, missing. I guess I'll say it like this: it's good, but it's not great. 6/10. I only realized now there's 2 diff guys one acting in the mv one as the actual rapper in the song oops. Normal people en 5. Bono must have had a great view of Central Park. Little details i like about this video later in the video, the main charector of the song is so tired that she has trouble keeping her hands up while singing the main charector appears to pour milk from her own cup into a childs bowl for cereal there appears to be tension between the accoustic guitarist and the main charector, as they appear to fight briefly on stage the main charector's mother stays up late caring for the youngest child, giving the impression that the main characters hard life is part of a generational cycle the main charector has to hold the baby so much while doing things becuase she can't put the baby down because thats not safe for the baby, another reason why she has trouble keeping her arms up while singing, and she almost never raises the arm that was holding the baby. the main charector washes the shoe at the end of the song with baking soda, symbolic of the rinse and repeat nature of her life, just another day and nothings any good how truly bad it is for her kids to be messing with her dress which she needs for work and appears to have diamonds on it and is her only nice dress. the main charectors children appear to have fallen asleep in her bed when she gets home, meaning she not only has to stay up when she's exhausted to clean what ever is on her childs shoes, but she also won't sleep well because her children are taking up space in her bed. the main charector only has one brief moment of joy and companionship, and its talking to another mother with children who appears to be going through the same things, all the while they sit next to grown young men playing basketball, a symbol of the result of all the hard work of parenting. the rest of the video she is alone, and is only helped some what by her elderly mother, who is also alone. this brief moment of joy and companionship just highlights how sad and alone she is. the wikpedia entry for this song says It follows the dilemma of a single mother struggling to conciliate her children's needs with her dream of becoming a singer., but i think she isn't really trying to pursue some dream of being a singer, i think being a lounge singer at a hotel at night is a job that she can manage in to her schedule of having to take care of her kids and elderly mom and she also wants to be a singer. In my youth. teenage years, I only had total peace when I was surfing with friends. There was a terrible Northeastern storm but it made the surf 15' to 25' waves. I took my Bugs Bunny board to the beach and paddled my arse off thru monster surf to catch a wave. I wrote a poem about it 30 years ago called The Storm. The Storm Late September in early morn' Waves plenty in structured chaos as I gazed into the storm Rain coming down like a waterfall My log covered in wax by my side Watching for the perfect set While waiting for my perfect ride My eyes caught sight of a wave a mile from shore Running with my log to water my heart pumping as I entered Heaven's door Adrenaline flowing as I met the wave halfway Picks me up then jump to stand living life as my last day Speeding like a bullet while rushing to shore Wave crashing over my head Like a washing machine in spin as my grave curled around me thinking I'm dead Exhausted, all I could do was float `till my log and I reached shore As I lay in spent peace on sand Knowing I made it through the Storm.
