The way this film portrayed this time in history made you feel deeper than any film I have seen before. Your heart always hurts when you hear about the war but this film makes you feel like you are there experiencing it in the moment. I also enjoyed the parts of the film that were almost dreamlike and surreal and you wonder if the characters are floating to another reality or if this was reality and the insanity that was happening around them was a dream. The film is based on the 1978 novel, I Am from the Fiery Village (Я из огненной деревни / Ya iz ognennoj Derevni) by Ales Adamovich. Together Klimov and Adamovich wrote the film’s screenplay. The film has come to be considered one of the greatest war films of all time. The best way to describe it is that it’s an amazing film that will ruin your day. It’s just one of the most devastating movies there is. So, be warned – Come and See is not of the same ilk as Klimov’s other most famous movie, the uproarious comedy, Welcome, or No Trespassing. The way in which Come and See was made gives some indication to how horrific it is to view. The shoots were dangerous – real flamethrowers and real bullets were used just feet away from actors. These difficult scenes changed the actors considerably over the course of filming. Aleksei Kravchenko, who played the lead, Flyora, as a 13-year-old, developed a full head of grey hair and wrinkles during the nine months of filming. Come and See – hell on earth Come and See is so nightmarish that it depicts an earthly hell. In fact, the film’s name is an allusion to the refrain from the Book of Revelation and its description of the apocalypse. This view of the Second World War as an apocalypse fundamentally distinguishes the movie from previous works of Soviet war cinema. They would traditionally present the events of the war in either a heroic or lyrical manner. Klimov, however, presents a view of the war as a world of madness and demonic possession. Not only people, but also animals are drawn into this horror. We see a stork soaked in the rain, standing motionless in the forest. It has nowhere to go and no one to fly to with glad tidings. Later, we witness the dying spasms of a cow ripped apart by a machine gun. The film attacks every sense possible, including sound. The loud crashing of bombing and gunshot deafens your ears. Meanwhile, emaciated human voices appear muffled and distorted by some sort of eternal ringing noise. Ordinary sounds are not safe, as they transform into ominous signs. Flies buzzing becomes a harbinger of a terrible pile of corpses slaughtered in Flyora’s village. Amid the sensory overload of the movie, sometimes a line will jump out that makes your skin crawl. Amid a thunderous cacophony of barking dogs, roaring engines, curdling wails, billowing flamethrowers, and chattering machine guns, a German soldier directly addresses the viewer: “You should not be. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth. ” Invoking Death and Hell was precisely the intention of Elem Klimov, who experienced the brutalities of war as a child in Stalingrad, and his cowriter Ales Adamovich, who fought as a partisan in Belorussia and witnessed the systematic burning of hundreds of villages and the massive extermination of civilians. I was rather keen to see it, especially given the reviews which called it "chilling" or lauded it as one of the top war films of all time. Forgive me for being a killjoy here, but after viewing this film, I was simply left with a feeling of "Really. The character of the boy doesn't seem developed enough and the imagery presented in some so-called "intense" scenes did not truly attract my attention nor made me empathize with the character. The scenes of the airplane bombing early in the film were the most harrowing I have ever seen in a movie. I had never seen anything that seemed so "real" so it was no surprise to learn that the only that to make it look that real is to really drop actual bombs from planes. It is still incomprehensible to me how the filmmakers got away with this legally and how they could actually count on the actors not getting maimed or killed. The same goes for the cow field scene where they used live ammunition which was more effective then the best executed CGI could ever do. Also the crawl through the swamp was shot in a way that made it clear it was really happening and again I wondered how the filmmakers knew the actors wouldn't sink down and suffocate in that bog. How Klimov expresses Florya's deafness in the aftermath of the bombing made me cringe in its effectiveness. I don't think I'll ever forget the scene of the Nazis burning the barn full of people. Words cannot express the feeling. It should simply be seen. The most searing image in my brain is the shot of the Nazi woman gluttonously feasting on lobster with delight as men, women and children were burned alive by the Nazi murderers destroying the village. Later, when Florya sees her twisted and twisting on the ground dying a painful death, I confess I relished it, though Klimov may have intended anything but that. Finally, I come to the scene where the Russians capture some of the commanding Nazis. It's hard to choose between what is more maddening: The disgust worm-like sniveling of the Nazi who tries to find sympathy from the Russians about to kill him or the Nazi who sticks by his "you deserve to die" convictions. This scene was as sickening and suspenseful as it gets. The major issue that detracted from the film for me was the lead. It was no surprise to me to learn that Alexei Kravchenko who played Florya was not a real actor at the time. His unconvincing performance often took me out of the film, but he did a good job considering that he was a first timer. The apocalypse now of WW2.
