She now lives alone in her South Bronx apartment, having all but cut herself off from the outside world. It's the notorious "Summer of Sam" and June only has to look out of her window to see the violence escalating with the brutal summer heat. The city is on a knife's edge, a pressure-cooker about to explode into the incendiary 1977 New York blackout riots - Alistair Banks Griffin - audience score: 898 vote - USA I was pleasantly surprised. It was a really good movie. I recommend seeing it. Thumbs up from me. The Demon Within: The Predators Darkness gave way to light as May blinked the last traces of sleep from her eyes. Looking around, her father was steering the car into a gas station while her mother rummaged through her purse deciding what snacks to buy at the small convenience store in the parking lot. “Oh look, the sleeping beauty is awake. ” May rolled her eyes and hid her yawn under a hand before stretching and pulling herself upright, accidentally bumping her sister as she did so. “Hey watch it! ” Came the quick response. “Sorry, accident. ” May quickly replied, her mother giving her a withering glare. As the car jerked under sudden breaking, May felt herself pressed up against her seat belt. Eyes quickly scanned for any incoming cars or errant poles but instead found nothing. ‘Typical’ May thought, unbuckling her seat belt and opening the door beside her, boots landing on hot asphalt as she escaped the prison that was a family road trip. Movement at the edge of May’s vision quickly drew her attention and she found herself standing roughly ten feet away from a priest who was dressed in long black robes despite the summer’s heat. “Welcome, family vacation? ” The man asked, a strange haze settling in May’s mind the moment his words reached her ears. “No, just a funeral, my aunt passed. ” Came the truthful reply which slipped from her lips before she could catch herself. “How terrible, you must be quite sad. ” The man’s words had an unnatural buzz to them and May found herself holding her ears, a sharp pain running through her head like a bolt of lightning. “Fucking hell! ” The young woman gasped, staggering under the pain. Unseen by her, a wide smile spread across the priest’s face. “How fortuitous, please do enjoy your time in our town. ” May felt her pulse rise briefly before a wave of sleepiness hit her. Yawning she felt herself withering under the noon sunlight and decided it was best to return to the car and get more sleep. “Who was that? ” Her sister asked, though May ignored her, pulling her leather jacket over herself and using it as a blanket. “Hey mom, she’s sleeping during the daytime again. ” “When will you grow up May? You’re not a teenager anymore. ” Her mother’s protests went unheard, sleep swiftly reclaiming May’s mind. The young woman drifted off into pleasant dreams, free from her family’s intrusions. A shiver brought May back to consciousness as the chill of evening air crawled over her. Memory of the priest flashed through her mind causing her eyes to snap open. Balling her hands into fists, May instinctively put up her guard. An empty parking lot bathed in the light of the setting sun greeted her. The young woman’s head swiveled back and forth looking for her family only to find herself alone. ‘The fuck? ’ May thought, noticing the shattered windows of the convenience store, glass strewn about the parking lot. With a flick, May opened her pocket knife. The comforting metallic click of the blade locking open gave her some much needed courage as she rushed into the store searching for any clue as to what had transpired while she was asleep. The crunching of glass under boots was the only sound within the ransacked convenience store that not hours before had been a rather warm and inviting small town gas station. ‘Something’s not right, no blood, but there are signs of violence. ’ May’s blue green eyes scoured the store for information. The sharp sound of shattering glass caused May’s heart to nearly jump from her mouth. Whipping around, blade held outwards in a defensive posture, May faced the possible threat only to be greeted by an empty bathroom. An ancient looking mirror lay smashed on the floor, fragments of glass and silver littering the stone tiles of the bathroom. “Fucking hell. ” May whispered in relief and immediately regretted it as the shadows in the room seemed to shift as she spoke. A strange pressure gripped her body, goosebumps spreading across her flesh as something focused its attention on her. A wolf’s howl echoed over the sleepy town, though it sounded nothing like the species that called New England home. Memories of the priest once again flitted through May’s mind, quickening her pulse. ‘Like hell I’m having a panic attack now. Stay calm, focus, you can do this’ May looked around the room for anything she’d missed, her eyes landing on a gas torch and a flash of realization lit up her mind. ‘Well that can’t be a coincidence can it? Or is it a false lead? Either way I’m going to gamble, worst that happens is I ruin my knife’s finish. ’ May quickly picked up the torch and gathered several shards of broken mirror. Igniting the blow torch, the young woman heated the silver, hoping it would get hot enough for what she needed. ‘This is wrong, this has to be a dream. ’ May thought to herself, the sun sinking below the trees and a thick fog rolling over the town. ‘Fucking hell, wake up, wake up, wake up. ’ May prayed, melting the silver and quickly sliding her knife through the molten metal, making sure not to coat the sharp edge and dull it before battle. The silver quickly froze onto the black metal of the pocket knife, the results were crude but strangely beautiful. Depressing the lock, May pocketed the weapon and killed the torch as she heard the sound of foot steps beyond the fog filled parking lot. ‘Claws on asphalt, how long’s it been since I last encountered wolves? Wish I had a gun right now. ’ May’s heart pounded in her chest as she prepared herself for one of mankind’s oldest enemies. Wolves and man had hunted each other constantly, both vying for the spot of apex pack hunter. The outcome was humanity’s overwhelming victory. Still only a fool would underestimate their ancient rivals for wolves were crafty and far more used to hunting than modern folk. ‘How many are there I wonder? ’ May backed into a corner, carefully avoiding the broken glass on the floor and keeping her footsteps silent, preparing herself for the coming fight. She knew she was outnumbered, but by what and how many was a mystery. Guttural laughter broke the silence as May watched and waited from her hiding spot. At least a dozen twisted voices moved through the fog, their owners just out of sight. ‘Hyenas, even worse than wolves’ May eyed the bathroom, trying to determine if it’s door was in good enough condition to barricade. Unfortunately it was already in pieces, leaving her with no chance of refuge as the chuckles grew louder. A howl cut through the chilly air, the fog dispersing with a sudden gust of wind, revealing a full moon, beneath which a pack of humanoid wolves circled the small convenience store. “Come out little human, why do you try to hide? Do you not know? Your scent has betrayed you. ” The largest of the beasts growled, the chuckles ceasing the moment it spoke. Fear overwhelmed May as her eyes met the bloodshot predator’s. A grin spread across May’s face as her instincts took control, rational thought blown away by terror. The pack had her surrounded but their alpha had exposed himself. She was dead if she fought them all but there was a chance for survival. A single, simple route to death, or life. Keeping her eyes locked onto the beast, May walked out of the store, stepping through the broken windows and out into the parking lot. “Well here I am. What now beast? ” May felt like laughing, in fact she could already feel chuckles worming their way up her throat, her heart pounding in her chest. The wolves all looked at her curiously, her audacity giving them pause, their instincts warning them of danger, for what kind of fool would abandon an advantageous position for such a vulnerable one? Still the leader was unfazed, a toothy grin spreading across its lips. “Poor thing, mind snapped because of fear? Well at least you have more tenacity than the last hunt. If you beg, I’ll let you join my pack, we could use another female. ” The werewolf belted out a howling laugh and licked its lips, hungrily eyeing the lone human. In response, May flicked out her blade, revealing her silvered fang with one hand while giving the wolf a one fingered salute with the other. “You think you can take me? Big words from a coward who hides behind numbers. Come at me alone if you have the courage beast, I’ll bury you but not before I neuter you, like a proper fucking dog. ” May’s voice shook with a mix of fear and fury, both emotions fighting for control of her mind. Still her instincts held firm and despite the tears forming at the corners of her eyes, she gripped her small blade tightly and prepared to fight. Black rage flashed across the werewolf’s face, causing him to howl in anger at May who answered with a scream of her own. The two predators began to circle each other, their lessors stepping back to watch. With supernatural speed the wolf darted towards the human, claws outstretched. May responded by raising her left arm into a guard position, protecting her head while flourishing her pocket knife. Claws and steel cut into flesh as the blows were exchanged. Hot blood ran down May’s arm, though her leather jacket had helped soften the blow, the claws had still cut to the bone. The werewolf had paid equally for his blow for May’s knife had sliced clean through his wrist, leaving him worse off than his supposed prey. The beast’s eyes momentarily left May as it looked back towards its pack. May didn’t wait to find out what it was planning and rushed forward, gambling her life on the momentary advantage her foe had given her. The wolf was clearly faster than its human opponent, however its lapse of attention proved fatal. May thrust her pocket knife into its throat, the blade burying itself to the hilt in flesh. Grabbing the wolf’s mane with her other hand the young woman screamed, stabbing again and again. The wolf thrashed about trying to bite his assailant, however the fight was already decided. With a sharp kick, May sent the beast staggering backwards where it collapsed on the cold asphalt. Wolf’s blood ran down May’s face as the other beasts watched her, hungrily eyeing the weakened human. Taking a deep breath of the cool night time air, May felt fear leave her. She was alive, she would survive and anything in her path would regret it. Her opponent slowly tried to tried to pull itself to its feet, his wounds try to seal themselves but the myth of silver held true and the blood flowed unstymied. Almost casually, May kicked the wolf in the snout, knocking it back to the asphalt. The beast’s eyes met the human’s as she pinned him to the ground with her knees and slit his throat. The instant the last gasp of life left her foe, a primal roar rose from deep within May’s soul sending the wolves fleeing in terror as May announced herself to the night.
